[Resistant starches. Part II. Physico-chemical and technological aspects solution medico-biological problems].

This paper is a review of the recent literature data related to structure, composition and physico-chemical properties of starches as well as the special methods of processing of the starch containing raw sources producing the food products with increasing content of resistant starches. The prognosis is made about usefulness of such resistant starches for control of some metabolic disorder in human organism and for prophylactic aims.

[Resistant starches. Part 1. General description and physiologic aspects].

This paper the recent data related to useful nutritional properties of resistant starches which combine the functional features of food fibers and prebiotics. The low glycaemic index of resistant starches, as well as their specific way of metabolism in gastrointestinal tract resulting in production of short-chain fatty acids in large intestine is discussed. The potential medicinal and prophylactic benefits of resistant starches to some disasters are described.

[Chronic EBV-infection in children with a high level of anti-H+/K+-ATPhase antibodies in gastric parietal].

We examined 50 children at the age of 4-17 suffering from chronic gastritis. AntiH+/K+-ATPhase antibodies of gastric parietal cells, anti-EBV antibodies IgG EA and IgM VCA were determined with the help of immune-enzyme analysis methods. The first group comprised 28 children with a high level of antiparietal antibodies in the blood serum, and 22 children with a normal level of antiparietal antibodies made up the second group.

[Chronic gastritis in children with concomitant diseases of the thyroid gland].

We examined: 1 group--16 children with chronic gastritis (CG) and autoimmune thyroiditis (AT); 2 group--41 children with functional thyroidal pathologies; 3 group--23 children with CG only. The average age in all groups was 11.17 +/- 2.

[State of reproductive health of boys in St. Petersburg].

Complex medical social analysis of reproductive health of modern boys was carried out. Approaches to specialized care of boys and youths in St. Petersburg are presented.

[Evaluation of the quality of hospital care of prisoners (results of sociological interviews)].

Interregional hospital attached to administration of prisons renders specialized care to prisoners. Anonymous sociological questionnaires distributed among 815 patients treated at the hospital showed that the patients were satisfied with organization of medical care and communal provision and demonstrated serious problems in organization of hospital care rendered to prisoners.

[Methodology of the evaluation and the reproductive potential of girls].

Health status of girls as future mothers causes great apprehension. The term "reproductive potential" is recommended to be used instead of "reproductive health". A program for evaluating the reproductive potential has been developed, including 5 sections.

[A clinico-social study of peripheral vessel anomalies in children].

The authors generalize results of examinations and operative treatment of 310 children with abnormalities of the venous and lymphatic vessels. References for differential diagnostics are described and term for operative interventions are given.

[Status of the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal glands in patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis].

The authors studied the glucocorticoid function of the adrenals in 117 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and in 37 children of the control group. Relation between the level of cortisol in the blood plasma and sex, age form and duration of the disease, indices of the clinical, laboratory and immunological activity, the nature of roentgenological changes in the joints and therapy was analysed. A decrease in the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex correlated with the severity of the clinical forms and duration of the disease, being especially manifest in children of younger age.

[Functional state of peripheral blood neutrophils in children with rheumatism and borderline conditions].

The authors discuss the effect of exotoxin of beta-hemolytic streptococcus (streptolysin-O) on the chemotactic activity of the peripheral blood leukocytes. 107 children with various forms of rheumatic fever and acute diseases of Streptococcal etiology and 18 healthy children were examined. The absence of the phenomenon of a specific chemotactic deactivation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in response to streptolysin-O in healthy persons and in those suffering from rheumatic fever has been revealed.

[Production of interleukin-1 by peripheral blood monocytes in children with respiratory diseases].

Overall 111 healthy children aged 3 to 7 years, 71 children with ARVI and those aged 2 to 14 years with ARVI complicated by bronchitis and pneumonia were examined. [Maternal instinct and the formation of family-oriented attitude in girls-future mothers].

An interview survey of 4180 girls aged 1-18 years, their mothers, teachers and tutors was conducted. It was found that the maternity instinct is inborn but it starts to show only during the second year of life and is manifested in the form of playing with dolls and reaches its peak at the age of 3-5 years. Playing with dolls occurs subconsciously and is not used for teaching the girls to acquire the habits of caring for a baby.

[Effect of congenital pathology in a child on the psychological climate in the family].

A study was made of 310 families having children with congenital developmental defects of peripheral vessels. The birth of a child with developmental pathology of peripheral vessels has a significant effect on demographic behaviour of the family, causing the limitation in further childbirth and leading to substantial worsening of relations between parents. It was found that the level of seeking medico-genetic care was extremely low and there was no proper control on the part of obstetrician-gynaecologists and district paediatricians.
