Acute infectious diarrhea (AID) represents an important clinical entity both regarding morbidity and mortality rates, even in industrialized countries, and it leads to one of the major public health burdens, among gastroenterological diseases, with significant healthcare costs. Oral rehydration solution is the cornerstone of the therapy, but despite its proven efficacy in avoiding dehydration, it is still underused as it does not reduce the duration of diarrhea; hence, it is perceived as ineffective by caregivers. In this narrative review, we collected literature regarding the use of racecadotril, deeply discussing its role in the treatment of AID in both adults and children.

The 2021 Australian Royal Commission noted that a large proportion of older adults in aged care live with dementia, yet there are limitations in the knowledge and understanding of staff who care for them. In the pursuit of educating pharmacists, physicians, allied health care professionals, researchers, academics, people living with dementia and their carers, and the public, who are facing the challenges of dementia management, the 'Best Practice in Dementia Health Care' conference was held on November 10, 2022 at Western Health (Sunshine Hospital, Melbourne, Australia).

Semaglutide is the second marketed glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist that can be used safely and efficiently in non-diabetic people with excess weight, providing a new milestone in the pharmacological treatment of obesity. This narrative review aims to describe the clinical actions of this new drug in weight management in non-diabetic patients along with possible side-effects and dropout reasons. To accomplish this, the PubMed database was searched to retrieve the most relevant clinical studies published to date on this topic, using the following keywords "semaglutide and obesity".

However, these foods contain potentially atherogenic fats. We aimed to determine whether this intervention that increased dairy consumption to recommended levels adversely affects serum lipid profiles.

The objective of this study was to determine the strengths and weaknesses of three-dimensional optical (3DO) imaging for monitoring body composition in either simulated or actual remote environments. Thirty healthy adults (ASTRO, male = 15) and twenty-two Antarctic Expeditioners (ABCS, male = 18) were assessed for body composition.

Objective: Transit-time flow measurement (TTFM) represents a valid tool in the assessment of the quality of the anastomosis during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). Nevertheless, a high variability limits its standardized use, lacking univocally accepted cut-off flow values. Our study analyzes TTFM data collected from a study population that underwent off-pump CABG (OP-CABG), with the aim to differentiate into subgroups according to the presence of diabetes mellitus.

Menu planning guidelines are available however, adherence to guidelines is unknown. This study aimed to determine; (i) what are the average serving sizes of menu items provided and do they meet recommended portion sizes? (ii) does consumption from a 'typical' menu provide sufficient protein? and (iii) can substituting a 'typical' menu with high-protein options enable residents to achieve protein adequacy?
Methods: This study involved 572 residents (73% female; aged 86.
Introduction: Recently, a new cryoballoon (CB) technology (POLARx; Boston Scientific) has come onto the market. Preliminary data have shown that its acute safety and efficacy are similar to those of the first-generation CB. The aim of this study was to assess the medium-term outcome of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with the POLARxTM CB in a large multicenter registry.

Nutritional interventions to correct under nutrition reduce these debilitating fractures, perhaps partly by reducing falls and slowing deterioration in bone morphology.
Objective: to determine whether a nutritional approach to fracture risk reduction in aged care homes is cost-effective.
Background: Olfaction is intimately involved in reproductive behaviors. However, there is limited evidence about the relationship between olfactory and sexual functioning, and whether this relationship is modulated by gender. This study aimed to investigate the correlates between olfactory and sexual functioning in a cohort of young healthy individuals; secondary outcomes were the possible correlates between disgust and perceived vulnerability to illness, with particular relation to sexual attitudes.

Background: Lifestyle modifications (i.e., physical activity [PA] and lower dietary intake) often are not sufficient to improve testosterone (TE) levels and promote weight loss in men with metabolic hypogonadism.

In -infected adults, the eradication is always recommended because of the risk to develop gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal associated diseases. Instead, before treating infected children, we should consider all the possible causes and not merely focus on infection.

We aimed to determine whether 12 months supplementation using high-protein foods (milk, cheese, yoghurt) prevents malnutrition in older adults.
Design: Cluster randomised control study.
() infection is a continuous challenge for both gastroenterologists and pediatricians. The international guidelines regarding diagnostic and treatment pathways differ between adults and children. The pediatric guidelines are more restrictive because children are rarely affected by serious consequences, particularly in Western countries.

It is characterized by renal phosphate wasting determining an increase in fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), growth retard, bone deformities and musculoskeletal manifestations.

Methods: A three-phase Consumer Expert Delphi process was undertaken between July 2020 and August 2021. Consumer experts included adults with lived experience of sarcopenia or health-care utilisation.

Background: Sarcopenia is an age-associated skeletal muscle condition characterized by low muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. There is no international consensus on a sarcopenia definition and no contemporaneous clinical and research guidelines specific to Australia and New Zealand. The Australian and New Zealand Society for Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSSFR) Sarcopenia Diagnosis and Management Task Force aimed to develop consensus guidelines for sarcopenia prevention, assessment, management and research, informed by evidence, consumer opinion, and expert consensus, for use by health professionals and researchers in Australia and New Zealand.

Carrying this label frequently leads to the avoidance of all beta-lactam antibiotics, favoring the use of other less preferred classes of antibiotics, that are more expensive and associated with more side effects and increased antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, delabeling a beta-lactam allergy is part of antimicrobial stewardship programs.

This paper, prepared by a multidisciplinary expert working group from the Australian and New Zealand Society for Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSSFR), provides an up-to-date overview of current evidence and recommendations based on a narrative review of the literature for the screening, diagnosis, and management of sarcopenia and frailty in older patients within the hospital setting. It also includes suggestions on potential pathways to implement change to encourage widespread adoption of these evidence-informed recommendations within hospital settings.

This has been well documented for seasonal influenza and the current pandemic with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), which disproportionately impact older adults, particularly those in residential aged care facilities. Inadequate nutrient intakes associated with impaired immunity, respiratory and muscle function are likely to augment the effects of immunosenescence.
