The data on 76 patients treated for benign or malignant giant-cell tumor (GCT) of the bone are presented. Surgery involving bone reconstruction and endoprosthetics was the basic therapeutic procedure. Cases with lytic benign GCT received 36-40 Gy of radiation prior to surgery whereas whose with malignant tumors were subjected to complex treatment including preoperative irradiation, surgery and chemotherapy.

The paper is concerned with the data on reoxygenation of superficial tumors in 38 patients exposed to densely and scarcely ionizing radiation. Tumor reoxygenation curves are presented. A tumor regression rate and reoxygenation of a tumor with respect to its original size showed correlation during fast-neutron therapy at 6.

The paper is concerned with the clinical testing of irradiation fractionation in photon therapy, of which the optimum variant was worked out using a method of mathematical simulation. It was conducted in 30 patients with osteogenic sarcoma. In 5 cases a course of photon therapy was supplemented by neutron irradiation.

A rarely occurring tumor, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the shoulder blade, is described. The tumor, found in a 19-year-old male, consisted of two components; a typical chondrosarcoma showing a moderate degree of anaplasia, and a tumor tissue composed of poorly differentiated cells with large numbers of thin-walled vessels. The two tissues were separated from each other by connective-tissue elements, though cells of the second component were seen in places to pass into the tissue of hyalin cartilage.

A working classification of vertebral tumors is discussed. The classification is based on tumor process expansion, presence of soft-tissue component and the degree of vertebral and neurologic complications. The extent and type of surgical procedure are determined in accordance with the authors' approach to tumor process staging.

[Spine osteomas].

Vopr Onkol

November 1986

Data on diagnosis and treatment of rare localization of osteoma in the spine (6 cases) are reported. Scanty literature data and the author's findings were used in the description of clinical and X-ray picture patterns versus different localization and structure of tumor. Recommendations for radical surgery are given.

The results of amphotericin B and cyclophosphamide treatment of 10 cases of chondrosarcoma are discussed. A marked (50-90%) regression of tumors and metastases and complete remission for 3-18 months were observed in 9 cases. Decompression laminectomy resulted in regression of neurologic symptoms in a case of chondrosarcoma disseminated to the spinal column with concomitant constriction of the spinal cord.
