Influenza A/duck/Aralsk/1/78 virus was isolated from ducks in southwestern Kazakhstan. Typing of this virus neuraminidase indicated its appurtenance to the 2nd avian type. Hemagglutinin of A/duck/Aralsk/1/78 virus typed by the HI test showed no relationship with any one of the strains used in the test including H0, H1, H2, H3, Hsw1, Heq1, Heq2, viruses and strains with all 10 avian hemagglutinins.

Antihemagglutinins for the newly isolated virus were detected in the sera of some specimens of the sea gull order. The data obtained suggest an active circulation of the virus in this region during the summer of 1977.

This conclusion has been drawn on the basis of the absence of antihemagglutinins to A(H1N1) virus in the sera from subjects of 16-20 years late in April and their detection in 25.9% of those examined on November 23, 1977.
