Using freeze-fracture method it is shown that at the early stages of interaction with chicken erythrocytes the influenza virus induces generalized changes in the physical state of erythrocyte plasma membranes resulted from local disturbances of the cell surface in adsorption sites of virions. Ultrastructural changes seen in the membranes reach their maximum 5 minutes after infection which corresponds to the moment of maximum pinocytotic cell activity in relation to the viruses.

The appearance of chemiluminescence has been detected in influenza virus-luminol-hydrogen peroxide system. An effective decrease of its intensity in the presence of oxygen radical scavengers (sodium azide, superoxide dismutase, mannitol, ethanol) is indicative of activated oxygen taking part in the reaction. Increased luminescence in the presence of o-phenanthroline and its suppression by antimycin A suggest that peroxidase-like activity of influenza virus is due to the presence in it of Fe-S-protein.

It was shown that in water media lipopolysaccharide-protein complex (LPSPC-) forms compact units with molecular weight 1.29 X 10(6) inclined to self-association. Disaggregation of LPSPC to subunits with molecular weight 7 X 10(4) under the action of the detergent and EDTA reveals the substantial role of hydrophobic interaction of ions of divalent metals in the formation of high molecular weight aggregates.
