Histiocytosis of the jaws in biopsies from 17 patients aged 19 to 51 years were studied at light and electron microscopy level. Birbek's bodies were found in Langerhans cells in all the biopsies confirming the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytoma. The structure of Birbek's bodies changed depending on the treatment--radiation or chemotherapy.

Tissue reactions to active modified composite material were studied in experiments on Chinchilla rabbits. In the first series of experiments plates from composite material were implanted: polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) plates were used in group 1, PMMA composition with hydroxyapatite (HAP) in group 2, and PMMA composition with HAP modified by polyacrylic acid in group 3. The content of HAP in each group was 30% by weight.

Ninety-seven patients with mandibular fractures were examined: 55 in Yakutsk and 42 in Moscow. In the Yakutsk patients the inflammatory process much more frequently progressed to the development of infectious inflammatory complications at the site of fracture than in Moscow. More expressed shifts in the immunogram were observed mainly in the patients who later developed infectious inflammatory complications.

A total of 126 patients with odontogenic inflammatory diseases were examined, 54 of these in Moscow and 72 in Yakutsk. The clinical and immunological parameters were assessed on days 2 and 6 after similar operations. In residents of Yakutsk the inflammatory process was associated with a more expressed intoxication and coursed 1.

Sixty-three patients with congenital and acquired defects and deformations of facial bones without concomitant diseases were examined. Twenty-eight of them were operated on; auto- and alloplasty was resorted to in 18 patients, and to 10 patients tactivin was administered after common protocols for immunocorrection before or after surgery. Immunologic and clinical studies showed that immunodeficiency states are the most probable causes of postoperative complications following repair surgery on the facial bones.

Lymphocyte subpopulations were studied in 18 patients by flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies before and after surgical repair of the mandible with different transplants. All the transplants used had a stimulating effect on the immunity system. The most marked changes in the time course of immunologic parameters were observed after transplantation of frozen bone and formalin-treated grafts.

Difficulties in the clinical diagnosis of tumors of minor salivary glands of the lips and cheeks are discussed on the basis of results of examination of 52 patients with such tumors and comparison of the diagnosis of this condition and of identical tumors of the large salivary glands. Discrepancies between the clinical and pathoanatomical diagnosis are analyzed. Clinical characteristics helpful in the diagnosis of the condition are presented.
