S,beta-Amidinoethyl thiophosphate, a radioprotective agent that was synthesized and studied, was shown to have certain advantages over cystamine: it was effective when used in a lesser amount; it was less toxic, had higher therapeutic effect, and, in contrast to castamine, it did not inhibit physical efficiency of animals. S,beta-Amidinoethyl thiophosphate and gammaphos were very similar in properties.

A new group of radioprotective agents, dimethylaminodithiazines, was discovered. The agents are effective when used in relatively small amounts and exert a radioprotective effect rapidly with both intraperitoneal and per os injections. The role of inhibition of oxidative processes and DNA biosynthesis in the mechanism of radioprotective action of dimethylaminodithiazines is discussed.

Disulfide bis-(beta-dimethyl octyl ammonium ethyl) and some of its analogues were shown to have a radioprotective effect. It is suggested that the mechanism of radioprotective action of quaternary ammonium compounds involves both a temporary inhibition of DNA synthesis in radiosensitive tissues and inhibition of oxidative processes in the organism.

It was shown that different polysaccharides markedly vary in their toxicity, exert a radioprotective effect when administered both 24 h and 1-4 h before irradiation, enhance and prolong the radioprotective action of S-containing radioprotective agents, and inhibit DNA synthesis in bone marrow which, in all appearance, plays a certain role in the mechanism of their radioprotective action.

The analysis was made of the relationship between the radioprotective efficiency of substituted benzothiadiazoles and their electronic characteristics. The protective effect of these substances was shown to correlate with their ability to participate in the electron transfer. It was established that the protective effect comes into play via the formation of metal complexes in which benzothiadiazole molecules are ligands.
