Objective: Develop a new method for continuous prediction that utilizes a single temporal pattern ending with an event of interest and its multiple instances detected in the temporal data.

Methods: Use temporal abstraction to transform time series, instantaneous events, and time intervals into a uniform representation using symbolic time intervals (STIs). Introduce a new approach to event prediction using a single time intervals-related pattern (TIRP), which can learn models to predict whether and when an event of interest will occur, based on multiple instances of a pattern that end with the event.

Inhibitors of enzymes that inactivate amine neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin), such as catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and monoamine oxidase (MAO), are thought to increase neurotransmitter levels and are widely used to treat Parkinson's disease and psychiatric disorders, yet the role of these enzymes in regulating behavior remains unclear. Here, we investigated the genetic loss of a similar enzyme in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Because the enzyme Ebony modifies and inactivates amine neurotransmitters, its loss is assumed to increase neurotransmitter levels, increasing behaviors such as aggression and courtship and decreasing sleep.

We employed in a correlative manner an unconventional combination of methods, comprising cathodoluminescence, cryo-scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and cryo-focused ion beam (FIB)-SEM, to examine the volumes of thousands of cubed micrometers from rabbit atherosclerotic tissues, maintained in close-to-native conditions, with a resolution of tens of nanometers. Data from three different intralesional regions, at the media-lesion interface, in the core, and toward the lumen, were analyzed following segmentation and volume or surface representation. The media-lesion interface region is rich in cells and lipid droplets, whereas the core region is markedly richer in crystals and has lower cell density.

The effect of socio-economic factors, ethnicity, and other factors, on the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 at the sub-population-level, rather than at the individual level, and their temporal dynamics, is only partially understood. Fifty-three county-level features were collected between 4/2020 and 11/2020 from 3,071 US counties from publicly available data of various American government and news websites: ethnicity, socio-economic factors, educational attainment, mask usage, population density, age distribution, COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, presidential election results, and ICU beds. We trained machine learning models that predict COVID-19 mortality and morbidity using county-level features and then performed a SHAP value game theoretic importance analysis of the predictive features for each model.

The rebreathing of expire air, with high carbon dioxide and low oxygen concentrations, has long been implicated in unexplained Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) when infants are placed to sleep in a prone (facedown) position. This study elucidates the effect of the aerodynamic parameters Reynolds number, Strouhal number, and Froude number on the percentage of expired air that is reinspired (rebreathed). A nasal module was designed that served as a simplified geometric representation of infant nostrils and placed above a hard, flat surface.

Insulation of the electrical contact between a redox protein and an electrode surface upon association of an antibody to an antigen monolayer assembled on the electrode is used to develop immunosensor devices. In one configuration, a mixed monolayer consisting of the N epsilon-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)lysine antigen and ferrocene units acting as electron transfer mediators is applied to sense the dinitrophenyl antibody (DNP-Ab) in the presence of glucose oxidase (GOx) and glucose. In the absence of DNP-Ab, the mixed monolayer electrode stimulates the mediated electrocatalyzed oxidation of glucose that results in an amplified amperometric response.
