Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D deficiency is common in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) and may relate to the disease's severity, but past studies on Vitamin D supplementation have produced mixed results.
  • A randomized controlled trial with 101 children showed that while Vitamin D3 supplementation improved vitamin D levels, it did not significantly reduce the severity of AD or affect type 2 immunity markers compared to a placebo.
  • The study concludes that despite improving vitamin D status, weekly supplementation does not impact AD severity or related biomarkers in these patients.

Background: The Omicron variant has challenged the control of the COVID-19 pandemic due to its immuno-evasive properties. The administration of a booster dose of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine showed positive effects in the immunogenicity against SARS-CoV-2, effect that is even enhanced after the administration of a second booster.

Methods: During a phase-3 clinical trial, we evaluated the effect of a second booster of CoronaVac®, an inactivated vaccine administered 6 months after the first booster, in the neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 (n = 87).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the effectiveness of liposomal bupivacaine (LB) in reducing post-operative opioid use and hospital stay duration in patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF).
  • Eighty-two patients were analyzed, with 59 receiving LB and 23 acting as controls, but findings revealed that LB did not result in lower opioid consumption or shorter hospital stays.
  • The amount of cervical vertebrae involved in the surgery was a significant predictor of opioid use, suggesting that patients with more extensive procedures may need different pain management strategies beyond LB.

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D3 supplementation over six weeks improved vitamin D status and reduced the severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children, as indicated by a decrease in SCORAD scores.
  • The study showed significant increases in the expression of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and the antimicrobial peptide Cathelicidin (CAMP/LL-37) in lesional skin but no change in Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin (TSLP).
  • These findings suggest that oral vitamin D3 may offer therapeutic benefits for managing AD by enhancing skin's immune responses.

Further education (FE) colleges are the most usual postsecondary education destination for deaf young people in England. The role of college contexts in promoting deaf students' learning warrants further exploration given the gaps in educational attainment common to deaf students and the potential for FE context to provide new and/or enhanced linguistic resources in comparison with school. The main research question is: How do deaf students' translanguaging practices change according to the different contexts of interlocution in college? Translanguaging entails the flexible use of semiotic resources not bounded by named languages.
