Introduction: Repairing damaged cartilage poses significant challenges, particularly in cases of congenital cartilage defects such as microtia or congenital tracheal stenosis, or as a consequence of traumatic injury, as the regenerative potential of cartilage is inherently limited. Stem cell therapy and tissue engineering offer promising approaches to overcome these limitations in cartilage healing. However, the challenge lies in the size of cartilage-containing organs, which necessitates a large quantity of cells to fill the damaged areas.

Article Synopsis
  • FDG PET-CT imaging can detect immune responses from various immunotherapies, including cancer vaccines like WT1.
  • A study conducted at Osaka University analyzed FDG PET-CT scans of patients treated with WT1 vaccine therapy from 2008 to 2018, finding increased FDG uptake in vaccinated skin and lymph nodes.
  • The combination of WT1 CTL and helper peptides led to stronger FDG uptakes, indicating a more robust immune response, suggesting that PET-CT may help predict the effectiveness of such cancer treatments in the future.

Daikenchuto (DKT) has been widely used for the treatment of postsurgical ileus in Japan. However, its effect on postsurgical adhesion formation has been obscure. In this study, the effect of DKT on postsurgical adhesion formation induced by cecum cauterization or cecum abrasion in mice was investigated.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are an important constituent of the cancer stroma. In intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), the features of CAFs at the primary site and in the metastatic lymph nodes (Met-LNs) and their origin have been unclear. In the present study, we characterized CAFs at the primary site (n = 42) and in the Met-LNs (n = 10) of human ICC by immunohistochemistry using potential molecular markers of CAFs, portal fibroblasts (PFs), hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), and bone marrow-derived fibrocytes (BMDFs).

The gastrointestinal tract is a common site for the occurrence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). NHL with gastrointestinal lesions may lead to clinically relevant intestinal complications such as obstruction, perforation, and exsanguination during the course of the disease. Consequently, patients with NHL are often examined by means of upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy at the initial visit.

Objective: We performed contrast-enhanced three-dimensional sonography (CE 3D US) with a perflubutane-based contrast agent to immediately evaluate the completeness of ablation of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions by extracorporeal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).

Subjects And Methods: Twenty-one HCC lesions were treated by a single ultrasound-guided HIFU ablation session, and CE 3D US was performed before, immediately after, and 1 week, and 1 month after HIFU, and contrast-enhanced CT (CE CT) or contrast-enhanced MRI (CE MRI) was performed before HIFU, 1 week and 1 month after HIFU, and during the follow-up period.

Results: Immediately and 1 month after HIFU, 17 lesions were evaluated as adequately ablated by CE 3D US, and the other 4 lesions as residual tumors.

Biojelly is a sort of polymer that is formed on a cellulose acetate membrane immersed in seawater. Interestingly, Biojelly inhibits attachment of marine organisms such as algae and barnacles. We could successfully isolate several marine microorganisms from Biojelly-attached microorganisms.

A 66-year old man, who had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and felt a progressive shortness of breath and fatigability, was admitted to hospital. Computed tomography showed a thickening of the aortic wall from the aortic arch to the aortic bifurcation, as well as mild pleural and pericardial effusion. Intravenous pyelography showed severe ureteral stenosis, along with hydronephrosis, of the left side.

Cytotoxicity of Ni ions on three fibroblasts such as L929, Balb/3T3 clone A31 and MC3T3-E1 were examined by cell count (CC) and Neutral Red assay (NR). Three cells were incubated for 6 days in 1 ml DME medium containing Ni ions which ranged from 0 to 2 mM/l. The results clarified that Ni ions had dose-dependent cytotoxicity.

Few reports have characterized auditory processing in monaural stimulation, which is important to the understanding of auditory brain activity in subjects with hearing loss. We therefore measured regional brain activity in response to monaural stimulation of 95 dB SPL monosyllables using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in subjects with normal hearing and five with unilateral deafness as controls for 'cross-hearing'. Images were analyzed by statistical parametric mapping software.
