Ranirestat is an aldose reductase inhibitor hypothesized to improve diabetic neuropathy. An open-label, single-dose, parallel-group study was conducted to compare pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics of an oral dose of ranirestat across subjects with normal hepatic function and patients with mild and moderate hepatic impairment because ranirestat is expected to be used by patients with diabetes mellitus, possibly including those with hepatic impairment. To evaluate the necessity for dose adjustment, PK profiles and tolerability were studied at the dose of 40 mg, the expected optimal clinical dose in patients with diabetic neuropathy and normal hepatic function.

Hormone receptor and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) protein tests in metastatic breast cancer tissue are recommended in the guidelines of the American Society of Clinical Oncology/American Pathology Association. As part of a multi-institutional study by the National Hospital Organization, we conducted an investigation to examine these molecular markers, using cytological specimens as a substitute for tissue specimens from breast cancer metastasis. To confirm the usefulness of receptors tested in metastatic lesions, the treatment course of registered metastatic breast cancer patients was analyzed.

The Potato Grouper, , is relatively rare worldwide. Records from the northernmost part of its range (Japan) have been few, resulting in a "Critically Endangered" listing on the Red List for Japan. The Japanese records were revised by examining literature, new specimens, photographs, and the internet, and a continuous distribution pattern from the tropical Ryukyu Islands (including adult individuals) to temperate regions affected by the Kuroshio Current were delineated; this suggests the species inhabits tropical Japan and can spread to temperate regions via the warm current.

We present an X-ray Compton scattering study on aqueous trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and guanidine hydrochloride solutions (GdnHCl) as a function of temperature. Independent from the concentration of the solvent, Compton profiles almost resemble results for liquid water as a function of temperature. However, the number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule extracted from the Compton profiles suggests a decrease of hydrogen bonds with rising temperature for all studied samples, and the differences between water and the solutions are weak.

Sourdough is a food item made by kneading grain flour and water together and allowing fermentation through the action of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillales) and yeast. Typically, Japanese bakeries make sourdough with rye flour, wheat flour, malt extract, and water and allow spontaneous fermentation for 6 days. We compared the microbial behavior and food components, such as organic acids, sugars, and free amino acids, of sourdoughs made using two different rye and wheat flours during the 6-day fermentation period.

Compton scattering is one of the most promising probes for quantitating Li under in operando conditions, since high-energy X-rays, which have high penetration power, are used as the incident beam and the Compton-scattered energy spectrum has specific line-shapes for each element. An in operando quantitation method to determine the Li composition in electrodes has been developed by using line-shape (S-parameter) analysis of the Compton-scattered energy spectrum. In this study, S-parameter analysis has been applied to a commercial coin cell Li-ion rechargeable battery and the variation of the S-parameters during the charge/discharge cycle at the positive and negative electrodes has been obtained.

Reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions are the key processes that underlie the batteries powering smartphones, laptops, and electric cars. A redox process involves transfer of electrons between two species. For example, in a lithium-ion battery, current is generated when conduction electrons from the lithium anode are transferred to the redox orbitals of the cathode material.

X-ray Compton scattering measurements of the electron momentum distribution in water confined in both single-walled and double-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT and DWNT), as a function of temperature and confinement size are presented here together with earlier measurements of the proton momentum distribution in the same systems using neutron Compton scattering. These studies provide a coherent picture of an anomalous state of water that exists because of nanoconfinement. This state cannot be described by the weakly interacting molecule picture.

Spin selective magnetic hysteresis (SSMH) curves, orbital selective magnetic hysteresis (OSMH) curves and magnetic quantum number selective SSMH curves are obtained for CoFeB/MgO multilayer films by combining magnetic Compton profile measurements and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer measurements. Although the SQUID magnetometer measurements do not show perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in the CoFeB/MgO multilayer film, PMA behavior is observed in the OSMH and SSMH curves for the |m|  =  2 magnetic quantum number states. These facts indicate that magnetization switching behavior is dominated by the orbital magnetization of the |m|  =  2 magnetic quantum number states.
