Background: Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is a high-risk surgical procedure. Delayed division of the pancreatic parenchyma (DDPP) was reported as a novel technique in HPD for reducing postoperative pancreatic fistula. However, it is often difficult to dissect the pancreatic head nerve plexus while leaving the pancreatic parenchyma intact, particularly in patients with a bulky tumor with vascular invasion.

Plasma exchange is an effective treatment for Kawasaki disease (KD), suggesting that plasma from patients with KD bears its causative agents. The aim of this study was to use mass spectrometry to identify candidate agents in patient sera. Serum samples were obtained from 17 KD patients.

Epstein-Barr Virus-Positive Mucocutaneous Ulcer With Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw Arising in the Mandible of a Rheumatoid Arthritis Patient: A Case Report.

This study presents a rare case of an Epstein-Barr virus-positive mucocutaneous ulcer (EBVMCU) co-existing with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in the mandible of a 54-year-old Japanese man who complained of painful swelling of the left mandibular gingiva over the past three months. The patient had a history of methotrexate (MTX) and bisphosphonates (BPs) use. Intraoral examination revealed a 35 mm large ulcerative lesion with marginal gingival swelling and bone exposure on the left side of the mandible.

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma exposure as a practical method for improvement of Brassica juncea seed germination.

Here we report that non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma exposure can improve Brassica juncea (leaf mustard) seed germination rate from 50 % to 98 %. The commercially relevant germination rate was achieved by plasma exposure for only 10 minutes and the effect sustains at least for one month under an appropriate storage condition. Improved germination by plasma exposure was also observed for Brassica rapa subsp.

This study aims to investigate the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in addition to conventional early mobilization in the early postoperative period after living donor liver transplantation (LTx) on body composition and physical function. This was a retrospective single-center cohort study. Adult subjects who were admitted for living donor LTx from 2018 to 2023 were included in the analysis.

In vitro susceptibility testing of phytochemicals from essential oils against Prototheca species.

Phytochemicals isolated from essential oils are effective alternatives for inhibiting microbial pathogens. Bovine protothecal mastitis is the cause of a reduction in milk production and the secretion of thin, watery milk with white flakes. In the present study, we performed in vitro susceptibility testing of the phytochemicals carvacrol, citral, and thymol in Prototheca strains isolated from cases of protothecosis in small animals and cow feces.

Clinical Outcomes of Use of the Porous Glass Membrane Pumping Emulsification Device During Transarterial Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Background/aim: The porous glass membrane pumping emulsification device enhances local therapeutic effects of transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, limited clinical outcomes have been reported. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization using the glass membrane pumping emulsification device for HCC.

Patients And Methods: Between 2019 and 2023, 58 patients (median age=73 years) with unresectable HCC underwent 73 transarterial chemoembolizations using the glass membrane pumping emulsification device at the Nagoya University Hospital.

Laparoscopic Warshaw procedure in pediatric solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas: Technical feasibility and oncological outcomes.

Achieving margin-negative resection is crucial in treatment of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas, while preserving the spleen during distal pancreatectomy is highly desirable in pediatric cases. Laparoscopic Warshaw procedure (Lap-WT) is invaluable when tumor involvement in splenic vessels complicates preservation. However, the feasibility of Lap-WT in pediatric patients remains contentious.

Impact of Cytoreductive Nephrectomy in the Management of Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

In this study, we aimed to determine the utility of cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) in real-world clinical practice and investigate whether CN contributes to improved oncological outcomes in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). This retrospective multicenter cohort study enrolled patients with mRCC who received systemic therapy at six institutions between May 2005 and May 2023. The patients were divided into those who did not undergo CN (Group I) and those who underwent CN (Group II).

A quick correction mechanism of the tongue has been formerly experimentally observed in speech posture stabilization in response to a sudden tongue stretch perturbation. Given its relatively short latency (< 150 ms), the response could be driven by somatosensory feedback alone. The current study assessed this hypothesis by examining whether this response is induced in the absence of auditory feedback.

The skin barrier and microbiome in infantile atopic dermatitis development: can skincare prevent onset?

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a prevalent Th2-dominant skin disease, involves complex genetic and environmental factors, including mutations in the Filaggrin gene and dysbiosis of skin microbiota characterized by an increased abundance of Staphylococcus aureus. Our recent findings emphasize the pivotal role of the skin barrier's integrity and microbial composition in infantile AD and allergic diseases. Early skin dysbiosis predisposes infants to AD, suggesting targeted skincare practices as a preventive strategy.

Structure-activity relationship studies of pyrogallol as a calcineurin/NFAT signaling suppressor.

Previously, we have shown that pyrogallol alleviated nasal symptoms and suppressed IL-9 gene up-regulation in allergy model rats by inhibiting calcineurin/NFAT signaling. As pyrogallol has antioxidative activity, it may be responsible for inhibiting calcineurin/NFAT signaling-mediated IL-9 gene expression. However, the relationship between antioxidative activity and suppression of IL-9 gene expression has not been elucidated yet.

The atrophic myocardium resulting from mechanical unloading and nutritional deprivation is considered crucial as maladaptive remodeling directly associated with heart failure, as well as interstitial fibrosis. Conversely, myocardial hypertrophy resulting from hemodynamic loading is perceived as compensatory stress adaptation. We previously reported the abundant presence of highly redox-active polysulfide molecules, termed supersulfide, with two or more sulfur atoms catenated in normal hearts, and the supersulfide catabolism in pathologic hearts after myocardial infarction correlated with worsened prognosis of heart failure.

The origin of esterase activity of Parkinson's disease causative factor DJ-1 implied by evolutionary trace analysis of its prokaryotic homolog HchA.

DJ-1, a causative gene for hereditary recessive Parkinsonism, is evolutionarily conserved across eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Structural analyses of DJ-1 and its homologs suggested the 106th Cys is a nucleophilic cysteine functioning as the catalytic center of hydratase or hydrolase activity. Indeed, DJ-1 and its homologs can convert highly electrophilic α-oxoaldehydes such as methylglyoxal into α-hydroxy acids as hydratase in vitro, and oxidation-dependent ester hydrolase (esterase) activity has also been reported for DJ-1.

Case report: A case of piriformis pyomyositis and pyogenic sacroiliitis due to non-typhoidal bacteremia in an immunocompetent healthy adult.

Non-typhoidal (NTS) rarely causes bacteremia and subsequent focal infections as an extraintestinal complication, even in immunocompetent adults. A 25-year-old man was hospitalized for several days with difficulty moving due to fever, acute buttock pain, and shivering. He had no recent or current respiratory symptoms and no clear gastrointestinal symptoms.
