Background And Purpose: Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI) with ischemic stroke have younger age of stroke onset compared with whites. However, ethnic differences in stroke subtypes in this population have been inadequately studied.

Methods: Consecutive young adult patients (aged ≤55 years) who were hospitalized for ischemic stroke between 2006 and 2012 at a tertiary center in Honolulu were studied.

The Neuregulin-1 (Nrg1) signaling pathway has been widely implicated in many aspects of heart development including cardiac trabeculation. Cardiac trabeculation is an important morphogenetic process where clusters of ventricular cardiomyocytes extrude and expand into the lumen of the ventricular chambers. In mouse, Nrg1 isoforms containing an immunoglobulin-like (IgG) domain are essential for cardiac trabeculation through interaction with heterodimers of the epidermal growth factor-like (EGF-like) receptors ErbB2/ErbB4.

A critical role of solute carrier 22a14 in sperm motility and male fertility in mice.

We previously identified solute carrier 22a14 (Slc22a14) as a spermatogenesis-associated transmembrane protein in mice. Although Slc22a14 is a member of the organic anion/cation transporter family, its expression profile and physiological role have not been elucidated. Here, we show that Slc22a14 is crucial for sperm motility and male fertility in mice.

Repression of Primitive Erythroid Program Is Critical for the Initiation of Multi-Lineage Hematopoiesis in Mouse Development.

Formation of the hematopoietic cells occurs in multiple steps. The first hematopoietic cells observed during ontogeny are primitive erythrocytes, which are produced in the early yolk sac within a limited temporal window. Multi-lineage hematopoiesis, which supplies almost the entire repertoire of blood cell lineages, lags behind primitive erythropoiesis in the tissue.

Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study included 111,621 men aged 31-60 years [63,558 with normal glucose tolerance (NGT); 37,126 with prediabetes; 10,937 with diabetes]. The Cox proportional-hazards regression model was used to identify variables related to the incidence of CAD.

The second derivative of the digital photoplethysmogram (SDPTG) is an indicator of arterial stiffness. The ratio of the height of the d wave to the a wave of the SDPTG (d/a) is associated with functional peripheral vascular tension and represents aortic-blood pressure (BP) augmented by reflection waves from the periphery. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the relationship between SDPTG and cardiovascular mortality in middle-aged and elderly Japanese women.

Objective: While type 1 programmed cell death (apoptosis) of T cells leads to immunosuppression in sepsis, a crosstalk between apoptosis and autophagy (type 2 programmed cell death) has not been shown. The aim of this study is to elucidate the details of the interaction between autophagy and immunosuppression.

Procyanidins are the oligomeric or polymeric forms of epicatechin and catechin. In this study, we isolated and purified dimer to tetramer procyanidins from black soybean seed coat and investigated the anti-hyperglycemic effects by focusing on glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) translocation and the underlying molecular mechanism in skeletal muscle of mice. The anti-hyperglycemic effects of procyanidins were also compared with those of monomer (-)-epicatechin (EC) and major anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-O-β-glucoside (C3G).

Aims/introduction: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) are a common first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes in Japan. However, little is known about patients' medication adherence, persistence and discontinuation in this setting.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of new DPP-4i users in a Japanese claims database.

Cancer relapse occurs with substantial frequency even after treatment with curative intent. Here we studied drug-tolerant colonies (DTCs), which are subpopulations of cancer cells that survive in the presence of drugs. Proteomic characterization of DTCs identified stemness- and epithelial-dominant subpopulations, but functional screening suggested that DTC formation was regulated at the transcriptional level independent from protein expression patterns.

Acetophenones Isolated from Acronychia pedunculata and their Anti-proliferative Activities.

Study of the chemical constituents of Acronychia pedunculata (L.) Miq. (Rutaceae) stems collected in Taiwan led to the isolation and identification of eight known and three new acetophenones, named acrophenone A (1), B (2), and C (3).

Denervation of the Eustachian Tube and Hearing Loss Following Trigeminal Schwannoma Resection.

Objectives To discuss eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) as a cause of hearing loss and to discuss its pathogenesis following resection of trigeminal schwannomas. Methods Presented herein are two cases of trigeminal schwannoma that were resected surgically with sacrifice of the motor branch of the trigeminal nerve. Neither of the cases had evidence of extracranial extension nor preoperative ETD.

Electroencephalographic Patterns in Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

The main objective of this study is to review and summarize recent findings on electroencephalographic patterns in individuals with chronic pain. We also discuss recent advances in the use of quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG) for the assessment of pathophysiology and biopsychosocial factors involved in its maintenance over time. Data collection took place from February 2014 to July 2015 in PubMed, SciELO and PEDro databases.

Heterogeneity of the Peripheral Circadian Systems in Drosophila melanogaster: A Review.

Circadian rhythms in organisms are involved in many aspects of metabolism, physiology, and behavior. In many animals, these rhythms are produced by the circadian system consisting of a central clock located in the brain and peripheral clocks in various peripheral tissues. The oscillatory machinery and entrainment mechanism of peripheral clocks vary between different tissues and organs.

Evaluation of the new criteria of 2010 for diabetes mellitus: Japan Diabetes Society.

We investigated the characteristics of the new criteria for diabetes mellitus (DM) issued by the Japan Diabetes Society in 2010, which include HbA measurement, and differences between 1999 criteria, in order to indicate clinical caution points. If a person with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≥126 mg/dl or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) 2-h value ≥200 and HbA ≥6.5 % is determined as having DM, the disease can be detected at a rate of ≥70 % in persons <60 years and at no more than 40-50 % in elderly persons.

Genome-wide association studies in the Japanese population identify seven novel loci for type 2 diabetes.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 80 susceptibility loci for type 2 diabetes (T2D), but most of its heritability still remains to be elucidated. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of GWAS for T2D in the Japanese population. Combined data from discovery and subsequent validation analyses (23,399 T2D cases and 31,722 controls) identify 7 new loci with genome-wide significance (P<5 × 10(-8)), rs1116357 near CCDC85A, rs147538848 in FAM60A, rs1575972 near DMRTA1, rs9309245 near ASB3, rs67156297 near ATP8B2, rs7107784 near MIR4686 and rs67839313 near INAFM2.

Effect of Feeding Diets Combining Whole-Grain Paddy Rice and High Levels of Fat on Broiler Chicken Growth.

Previously, we showed that the growth of chicks fed a diet containing 43% whole-grain paddy rice and 10% soybean oil was retarded relative to a control group fed a corn-based diet containing 6% soybean oil. However, feeding chicks with 43% whole-grain paddy rice containing 6% soybean oil resulted in normal growth. It is possible that the observed growth retardation was caused by the high soybean oil content or resulted from the combination of whole-grain paddy rice and the high level of soybean oil which was added to the diet to maintain the overall energy content.

Molecular biomarkers that can assess sperm acrosome status are very useful for evaluating sperm quality in the field of assisted reproductive technology. In this review, we introduce and discuss the localization and function of acrosomal proteins that have been well studied. Journal databases were searched using keywords, including "human acrosome", "localization", "fertilization-related protein", "acrosomal membrane", "acrosomal matrix", "acrosome reaction", "knockout mouse", and "acrosome marker".
