Occurrence of spermic diploid and aspermic triploid forms of Fasciola in Vietnam and their molecular characterization based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.

Fasciola spp. found in Asian countries are diversified in nature, and they should therefore be characterized by spermatogenesis, ploidy and genetic differentiation as well as morphology. The present study showed that spermic diploid and aspermic triploid forms of Fasciola occurred in Vietnam.

Stability of the seven hexon hypervariable region sequences of adenovirus types 1-6 isolated in Yamagata, Japan between 1988 and 2007.

Seven hexon hypervariable regions (HVRs) of adenoviruses (Ads) were identified by comparing the regions among different serotypes; however, no one has compared HVR sequences among the identical serotypes, except for adenovirus type 3 (Ad3). To examine a variability between the HVRs for each serotype, we compared the sequences of Ad1-6 isolates, respectively, isolated between 1988 and 2007 in Yamagata, Japan. We selected 23-43 isolates randomly and sequenced 894-987 bp regions.

Bone formation in rat calvaria ceases within a limited period regardless of completion of defect repair.

A bone defect that is not repaired with bone completely is designated a non-union defect or a critical-size defect. The biological mechanism that regulates the process of bone repair of the critical-size defect remains unknown. The present study was designed to investigate bone repair in a critical-size defect compared with that in a smaller or non-critical-size defect.

[Two cases of anesthesia mumps in the upper parotid gland after general anesthesia in the lateral position].

We describe two cases of acute transient swelling of the upper side of parotid glands of the patients after general anesthesia in the lateral position. The serum amylase levels in the patients were not increased and the enlargement of the parotid gland was diagnosed as anesthesia mumps. Previous reports suggested that mechanical compression might produce the swelling of the secreting organ, but our patients showed temporal parotid enlargement in the upper free side.

[Perioperative management for cardiovascular operations in two patients with cold agglutinin disease].

Cold agglutinin (CA) reacts reversibly with red blood cells at a low temperature and may cause thromboembolism of various organs. Therefore, special consideration is required in patients with cold agglutinin disease (CAD) undergoing cardiovascular surgery requiring hypothermia. Case 1: A 71-year-old man with elevated CA was scheduled to undergo total aortic arch replacement.

The study examined the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), type I collagen and osteocalcin during bone healing in a rat calvarial experimental defect model. Twelve-week-old male Wistar rats were used. A full-thickness standardized trephine defect was made in the parietal bone, with the rat under anesthesia.

Identification of a second, non-conserved amino acid that contributes to the unique sugar binding properties of the nematode galectin LEC-1.

The basic disaccharide structure recognized by galectin family members is the lactosamine-like structure Galbeta1-4(3)Glc(NAc). The 32-kDa galectin LEC-1 of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is composed of two domains, each of which is homologous to vertebrate 14-kDa-type galectins. The N-terminal lectin domain of LEC-1 recognizes blood group A saccharide (GalNAcalpha1-3(Fucalpha1-2)Galbeta1-3GlcNAc), whereas this saccharide is poorly recognized by the C-terminal domain.

Analysis of monthly isolation of respiratory viruses from children by cell culture using a microplate method: a two-year study from 2004 to 2005 in yamagata, Japan.

Although well over 200 viral agents have been implicated in acute respiratory infections (ARIs) among children, no system able to detect such a wide range of viruses has been established. Between January 2004 and December 2005, a modified microplate method, including HEF, HEp-2, Vero E6, MDCK, RD-18S, and GMK cell lines (HHVe6MRG plate), was adopted to isolate viruses. A total of 1,551 viruses were isolated, representing both outbreaks and sporadic cases, from 4,107 nasopharyngeal specimens, at monthly isolation rates of 22.

Crystallization and preliminary x-ray crystallographic analysis of galectin LEC-1 from Caenorhabditis elegans.

Galectin LEC-1 isolated from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was the first galectin found in invertebrates and also the first tandem-repeat-type galectin identified, containing two homologous carbohydrate-binding sites. This galectin is localized most abundantly in the adult cuticle and possibly plays a role in the formation of epidermal layers. We succeeded in crystallizing LEC-1 composed of 279 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 31,809 Da under two independent sets of conditions as a result of extensive screening.

Clinical impact of human metapneumovirus genotypes and genotype-specific seroprevalence in Yamagata, Japan.

The clinical impact of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) genotypes and the relation between the hMPV genotype in circulation and genotype-specific seroprevalence are yet to be clarified. We determined the genotypes of 93 hMPV strains that were isolated between 2004 and 2006 in Yamagata, Japan, and identified 35 genotype A2, 14 genotype B1, and 44 genotype B2 isolates. Children infected with genotype A2 hMPV were significantly older than those infected with genotype B1 hMPV.

Effects of estradiol and progesterone on the proinflammatory cytokine production by mononuclear cells from patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Aim: To investigate the effects of estradiol (E2) and progesterone on the unstimulated and oxidative stress-stimulated production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-8, and macrophage chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with chronic hepatitis C and healthy controls.

Methods: The PBMCs were separated from age-matched 72 males and 71 females with and without chronic hepatitis C, who were divided into two groups based on a mean menopausal age of 50 years. Oxidative stress was induced by hydrogen peroxide in the cells incubated in serum-free media.

Opposing effects of estradiol and progesterone on the oxidative stress-induced production of chemokine and proinflammatory cytokines in murine peritoneal macrophages.

In inflammatory and oxidative liver injury, virus proteins and reactive oxygen species are involved in the regulation of proinflammatory cytokine production by macrophages. This study investigated the effects of estradiol (E2) and progesterone on the unstimulated and oxidative stress-stimulated production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-2, and macrophage chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 by peritoneal macrophages isolated from male and female mice. E2 inhibited the cytokine production of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, MIP-2, and MCP-1 by the unstimulated macrophages from males and females, which was then further stimulated by progesterone.

Incidence and risk factors of postoperative vocal cord paralysis in 987 patients after cardiovascular surgery.

Background: Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) after cardiovascular surgery can affect the postoperative outcome. The aim of the present study was to clarify the incidence of VCP after cardiovascular surgery and the relationship between the surgery characteristics and the risk of VCP.

Methods: A total of 987 consecutive patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery (cardiac, n = 895; aortic, n = 92) were enrolled.

The herpes simplex virus type 1 BgKL variant, unlike the BgOL variant, shows a higher association with orolabial infection than with infections at other sites, supporting the variant-dispersion-replacement hypothesis.

The identification and geographic distribution of the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) BglII restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) variants named BgK(L) and BgO(L) in clinical isolates from orolabial and cutaneous sites were described in our previous reports, in which the dispersion and replacement of HSV-1 variants were proposed. The base substitution sites deduced from the BgK(L) multiple RFLP variations were mapped to the U(L)12 (DNase), R(L)2 (alpha0 transactivator), and latency-associated transcript genes in the present study. The results show that the relative frequencies (RFs) of BgK(L) are significantly higher in orolabial and cutaneous HSV-1 infections than in ocular infections.

Outbreak of human metapneumovirus detected by use of the Vero E6 cell line in isolates collected in Yamagata, Japan, in 2004 and 2005.

A number of epidemiological studies have shown human metapneumovirus (hMPV) to be one of the most important viral agents associated with acute respiratory infections in humans. However, due to the difficulty in growing the virus, all epidemiological studies of hMPV infection have been performed on the basis of the molecular method. Thus, the development of a cell line suitable for the isolation of hMPV from clinical specimens is a crucial step for further research.

Age and comorbidity as risk factors for vocal cord paralysis associated with tracheal intubation.

Background: Vocal cord paralysis after tracheal intubation may be attributed to ageing and comorbidity. However, the relationship between patient characteristics and the risk of vocal cord paralysis is unknown.

Methods: We prospectively analysed data representing 31 241 consecutive surgery patients who underwent tracheal intubation to determine whether duration of intubation, age, sex, and cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and metabolic diseases were risk factors for vocal cord paralysis associated with intubation.

Background: Treating gastric cancer in remote island hospitals remains a major clinical challenge. Factors affecting prognosis of patients treated in general hospitals are still at large. We sought to determine the characteristics of gastric cancer in the Amamiooshima (Amami) archipelago of Japan and also evaluated the independent prognostic factors by the Cox regression analysis.

Relationship between floral longevity and sex allocation among flowers within inflorescences in Aquilegia buergeriana var. oxysepala (Ranunculaceae).

Understanding the fitness of plants with inflorescences requires examining variation in sex allocation among flowers within inflorescences. We examined whether differences in the duration of the male and female phases of flowering lead to variation in sex allocation and reproductive success among flowers within inflorescences. In 2002 and 2003, we quantified floral longevity, floral sex allocation, and reproductive success between the first and the second flowers within inflorescences in a protandrous species, Aquilegia buergeriana var.

A slow spread of adenovirus type 7 infection after its re-emergence in Yamagata, Japan, in 1995.

We have continued the epidemiological study on adenovirus type 7 (Ad7), which re-emerged in 1995 in Yamagata, Japan. Between 1999 and 2004, we isolated only four strains from 10,778 throat swab specimens among children with acute respiratory infections. A serological survey of 303 specimens revealed the antibody-positive rate against Ad7 to be 0-7.
