To establish histologic criteria for a diagnosis of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), we investigated 69 peritoneal biopsy specimens histologically and immunohistochemically. The specimens included cases of EPS (n = 12), suspected cases of EPS without later manifestation (n = 5), cases of infectious peritonitis (n = 20), cases of ultrafiltration failure (n = 25), and peritoneum at the start of peritoneal dialysis (n = 7). For each specimen, we evaluated these histologic parameters: fibrin deposition, mesothelial denudation, interstitial fibrosis, peritoneal fibroblast swelling, perivascular bleeding capillary angiogenesis, microvascular sclerosis, and interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration.

Groups of mated female Sprague-Dawley rats were simultaneously exposed to 0 (sham exposed), 7, 70, or 350 microT (rms) circularly polarized 50 Hz magnetic fields (MF) for 22 h/day on gestational day 8-15, the period of rat fetal organogenesis (organogenesis study) or from day 0 to day 7 of gestation, the rat preimplantation period (preimplantation study). The osteosclerotic (oc/oc) mouse, a genetically distinct murine mutation that has a functional defect in its osteoclasts, also has rickets and shows an altered endochondral ossification in the epiphyseal growth plate. The disorder is morphologically characterized by an abnormal extension of hypertrophic cartilage at 10 days after birth, which is later (21 days after birth) incorporated into the metaphyseal woven bone without breakdown of the cartilage matrix following vascular invasion of chondrocyte lacunae. In situ hybridization revealed that the extending hypertrophic chondrocytes expressed type I and type II collagen mRNA, as well as that of type X collagen and that the osteoblasts in the metaphysis expressed type II and type X collagen mRNA, in addition to type I collagen mRNA.

Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FHCC), a rare variant of hepatocellular carcinoma, is becoming more prevalent; however, up until 1999, only 18 cases had been reported in Japan. We recently diagnosed a case of FHCC in a 46-year-old Japanese man who had visited four hospitals before being finally admitted to our department. To evaluate the significance of murine double minute 2 (MDM2) oncoprotein in human breast cancer as a nuclear-cytoplasmic shuttling protein, an estrogen receptor (ER) alpha regulator, and a prognostic marker and to study how MDM2 is overexpressed, we investigated its status in tissue samples and examined the correlation between overexpression and MDM2 gene abnormalities, status, and clinicopathological parameters. We detected MDM2 oncoprotein in both nucleus and cytoplasm by frozen-section immunohistochemistry. There was a significant correlation between MDM2 overexpression and low-grade nuclear atypia, absence of lymph node involvement, and increased levels of ER alpha protein.

Objective: To elucidate the role of osteopontin (OPN) in monocyte recruitment in crescentic glomerulonephritis, we investigated immunohistochemical localization of OPN in the kidney and its correlation with clinical and histopathologic parameters in biopsy specimens of patients with myeloperoxidase antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody- (MPO-ANCA) associated glomerulonephritis.

Microbial and plant secondary metabolites were screened for compounds that are selectively cytotoxic to mutant p53-expressing mouse fibroblasts. As a result, furcreastatin, a novel steroidal saponin, was isolated from an EtOH extract of the leaves of Furcraea foetida. Furcreastatin consisted of hecogenin as the aglycone and a hexasaccharide containing D-galactose, L-rhamnose and four D-glucose residues.
