- Patients with β-thalassemia major (β-TM) experienced a significantly higher incidence of COVID-19 infections compared to healthy controls (61.9% vs. 7.1%).
- The majority of those infected with COVID-19 in the β-TM group had either asymptomatic (70.8%) or mild cases (26.1%), with no fatalities recorded; however, disease severity was greater in female patients.
- Post-infection and post-vaccination, β-TM patients demonstrated significantly higher levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies compared to controls, indicating a strong immune response despite their underlying health conditions.
