Dual-energy metal artefact reduction for iodine-125 seed identification in postimplant CT after prostate brachytherapy.

Objectives: To assess the metal artefact reductions of dual-energy CT high-energy virtual monochromatic images (VMI) combined with the Single-Energy Metal Artifact Reduction (SEMAR) (CANON MEDICAL SYSTEMS, Otawara, Japan) processing techniques for iodine (I)-125 seed identification in postimplant CT after prostate brachytherapy.

Methods: Dual-energy acquisition with fast tube voltage switching was performed on a prostate phantom with simulated seeds and six clinical cases treated with I-125 prostate brachytherapy. The images were retrospectively reconstructed at VMI energy levels of 65-200 keV and with and without SEMAR (SEMAR and non-SEMAR images).

Effectiveness of palpation technique training and practice using a muscle-nodule-palpation simulator.

[Purpose] Extant techniques for palpating nodules, a diagnostic criterion of myofascial trigger points, lack high reliability. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of training and practice using a novel muscle-nodule-palpation simulator. [Participants and Methods] Sixteen university students (age range: 19-22 years) were randomly assigned to the training (=8) and control (=8) groups and used the muscle-nodule-palpation simulator to determine the position and orientation of the muscle nodule embedded in the model.

Wernicke encephalopathy with atypical imaging findings in a depressed patient: A case report.

This case report highlights the rare occurrence of Wernicke encephalopathy caused by malnutrition in a depressed patient with atypical imaging findings. A 60-year-old female with depression developed a disturbance of consciousness owing to Wernicke encephalopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed abnormal signals in the thalamus and mammillary bodies around the third ventricle, cerebral aqueduct, and fourth ventricle.

Giant adiabatic temperature change and its direct measurement of a barocaloric effect in a charge-transfer solid.

Solid refrigerants exhibiting a caloric effect upon applying external stimuli are receiving attention as one of the next-generation refrigeration technologies. Herein, we report a new inorganic refrigerant, rubidium cyano-bridged manganese-iron-cobalt ternary metal assembly (cyano-RbMnFeCo). Cyano-RbMnFeCo shows a reversible barocaloric effect with large reversible adiabatic temperature changes of 74 K (from 57 °C to -17 °C) at 340 MPa, and 85 K (from 88 °C to 3 °C) at 560 MPa.

Refractive Index Measurement Using SOI Photodiode with SP Antenna toward SOI CMOS-Compatible Integrated Optical Biosensor.

This paper proposes a new optical biosensor composed of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) p-n junction photodiode (PD) with a surface plasmon (SP) antenna. When the phase-matching condition between two lateral wavelengths of the diffracted light from the SP antenna and the waveguiding mode in the SOI PD is satisfied, we observe sharp peaks in the spectroscopic light sensitivity. Since the peak wavelength depends on the RI change around the SP antenna corresponding to the phase-matching condition, the SOI PDs with an SP antenna can be applied to the optical biosensor.

[Purpose] Young's modulus distributions for subcutaneous and muscle tissues in a large sample of healthy individuals, based on ultrasonography and compression testing, remains uninvestigated till date. This study aimed to separately estimate the hardness of subcutaneous tissues and muscles in the human gluteal region under a range of loads in terms of mean Young's moduli and associated distributions. [Participants and Methods] Data of 21 males aged 20-22 years were acquired using synchronous compression testing and ultrasonography.

Properties of muscle nodules recognized by manual physical therapy practitioners.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to describe the properties of muscle nodules () recognized by manual physical therapy practitioners. [Participants and Methods] A total of one hundred and thirty-three physical therapists, occupational therapists, judo therapists, and acupuncturists participated in this study. The shape, size, direction, depth, and hardness of muscle nodules, often treated in the buttocks, were investigated through the completion of a questionnaire.

Evidence of proton-coupled mixed-valency by electrochemical behavior on transition metal complex dimers bridged by two Ag ions.

H-Bonded metal complex dimers with reversible redox behaviour, which are connected by a low-barrier hydrogen bond (LBHB) with a very low energy barrier for proton transfer, can provide a unique mixed-valency state stabilized by the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) phenomenon. Using cyclic voltammetry measurements, newly prepared [ReIIICl2(PnPr3)2(Hbim)]2 (2) and [OsIIICl2(PnPr3)2(Hbim)]2 (3) existing as H-bonded dimers in a CH2Cl2 solution showed a four-step and four-electron transfer containing two mixed-valency states of ReIIReIII and ReIIIReIV, and OsIIOsIII and OsIIIOsVI, respectively. Furthermore, [ReIIICl2(PnPr3)2(Agbim)]2 (4) and [OsIIICl2(PnPr3)2(Agbim)]2 (5), bridged by two Ag+ ions instead of two H-bonding protons, were prepared, and their electrochemical behaviours changed to a two-step and four-electron transfer.
