Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of gap junctions in overactive bladder conditions caused by bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and the effects of estrogen deficiency.
  • Four groups were analyzed: control, ovariectomy, BOO, and ovariectomy with BOO, focusing on the impact of medications oxybutynin and a gap junction blocker, 18-alpha glycyrrhetinic acid (18-α-GA).
  • Results indicate that obstruction significantly increases gap junctions (connexin-43), with ovariectomy having a limited effect on its own; however, when combined, ovariectomy reduces the efficacy of gap junction blockers in the presence of BOO.
