This study aimed to investigate the influence of adding an alkalizing agent to the scalding water of a slaughterhouse in Brazil to inactivate hygiene indicator bacteria in pig carcasses. Scalding is critical during carcass processing because slaughterhouses' scalding water is constantly renewed; therefore, it is usually contaminated with organic matter, such as faeces and dirt from the previous carcasses. The treatments evaluated consisted of counting Enterobacteriaceae and mesophilic bacteria in pork jowls at 62 °C, 65 °C, 68 C, and 72 °C after 0.

Co(III) complexes of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand PY4Im (PY4Im = (1,3-bis(bis(2-pyridyl)methyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)) having the general formula [(PY4Im)Co(X)](ClO) (X = NCMe; = 3: OH, N, NCS, ONO, F; = 2: OCO, = 1; (N), = 0) were prepared and structurally characterised. X-ray structural data are consistent with the presence of a influence due to the coordinated carbene carbon, and this is also supported by computational results. C NMR spectra of the complexes did not display peaks corresponding to the carbene carbon, except in the case of the [(PY4Im)Co(OCO)] cation, where a peak at = 170.

Background: Despite the well-documented relationship between weight gain and poorer cessation outcomes among smokers, the role of the former (baseline) weight in smoking cessation is insufficiently investigated. We hypothesized that patients with higher baseline body mass index( BMI) have a worse prognosis in tobacco cessation.

Objectives: This retrospective clinical cohort study aimed to investigate the role of the baseline BMI on abstinence over 12 months after participation in smoking cessation treatment conducted in a middle-income country (n = 664).

Article Synopsis
  • There is a potential link between COVID-19 infection and the emergence of psychiatric symptoms during and after the acute phase, highlighting the importance of monitoring mental health in affected individuals.
  • In a study of 895 mild COVID-19 patients, significant levels of depressive, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms were reported by 26.2%, 22.4%, and 17.3% of participants, respectively.
  • An increased number of COVID-related symptoms was found to be associated with higher levels of these mental health issues, suggesting that the severity of physical symptoms may impact psychological well-being post-infection.

Purpose: It is well known that interstitial photodynamic therapy (iPDT) of large tumors requires effective planning to ensure efficient delivery of therapeutic dose to the target tumors. This should be achieved in parallel with minimal damage to the nearby intact tissues. To that end, clinical iPDT can be attained using cylindrical diffusing optical fibers (CDFs) as light sources.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. Although cigarette smoking prevalence has decreased, there are still disparities in morbidity and mortality experienced by individuals with substance use and/or mental disorders when compared to general population. The aim of this study was to compare treatment outcomes between three subgroups of smokers: individuals with substance use disorder (SUD-only), individuals with mental disorder without substance use disorders (MD-only), and individuals with co-morbid substance use and mental disorder (SUD + MD).
