Satratoxin G (SG) is a macrocyclic trichothecene mycotoxin produced by Stachybotrys chartarum, the "black mold" suggested to contribute etiologically to illnesses associated with water-damaged buildings. Using an intranasal instillation model in mice, we found that acute SG exposure specifically induced apoptosis of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the olfactory epithelium. Dose-response analysis revealed that the no-effect and lowest-effect levels at 24 hr postinstillation (PI) were 5 and 25 microg/kg body weight (bw) SG, respectively, with severity increasing with dose.

Depot-holders are women from the community who promote good health practice and use of clinics. They keep a stock of contraceptives and oral rehydration salts to supply other women and are paid some incentives. In 2003, the NGO Service Delivery Program (NSDP) introduced depot-holders in three types of urban area in Bangladesh as a pilot.

In fluoroquinolone-resistant strains, double mutations (Ser83-->Leu, Asp87-->Asn or Gly) and a single mutation (Ser80-->Ile) were detected in the QRDRs of gyrA and parC, respectively.

The results, supported by theory, show that the c-axis intrinsic magnetic stability of this superior permanent magnetic material arises predominantly at one of the Nd sites (g). The other site (f) undermines magnetic stability by favoring a magnetic moment orientation in the basal plane.

DON (250 to 1000 ng/ml) induced both IL-8 mRNA and IL-8 heteronuclear RNA (hnRNA), an indicator of IL-8 transcription, in the human U937 monocytic cell line in a concentration-dependent manner. Expression of IL-8 hnRNA, mRNA and protein correlated with p38 phosphorylation and was completely abrogated by the p38 MAPK inhibitor SB203580.

Simultaneous exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) markedly amplifies induction of proinflammatory cytokine expression as well as IL-1-driven lymphocyte apoptosis by trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON) in the mouse. The purpose of this research was to test the hypothesis that LPS priming will sensitize a host to DON-induced proinflammatory cytokine induction and apoptosis. In mice primed with LPS (1 mg/kg bw) ip.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that MAPKs mediate both apoptosis and survival in DON-exposed macrophages. At concentrations which partially inhibit translation, DON induced phosphorylation of p38 and ERK 1/2 mitogen activated protein kinases within 15 min in RAW 264.

Further tests with an antiserum to an international type strain of the provisional serovar E16553 identified an additional 15 isolates. None of the isolates reacted with antisera to the established Shigella serovars or any other provisional serovars reported so far and all showed biochemical reactions typical of S.

Diffuse x-ray scattering measurements reveal that the optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.92 superconductor is intrinsically modulated due to the formation of a kinetically limited 4-unit-cell superlattice, q(0)=(1/4, 0, 0), along the shorter Cu-Cu bonds. The superlattice consists of large anisotropic displacements of Cu, Ba, and O atoms, respectively, which are correlated over approximately 3-6 unit cells in the ab plane, and appears to be consistent with the presence of an O-ordered "ortho-IV" phase.

Trichothecene-induced leukocyte apoptosis can be augmented by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) but the mechanisms involved in this potentiating effect are not completely understood. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON, vomitoxin) can interact with LPS directly and other mediators or agonists associated with immune/inflammatory responses to induce apoptosis in primary murine leukocyte cultures.

Coexposure to LPS and the trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON, vomitoxin) induces corticosterone-dependent apoptosis in thymus, Peyer's patches, and bone marrow in mice. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) plays a central role in corticosterone induction and subsequent leukocyte apoptosis in this model.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that differential activation of transcription factor binding in the spleen correlates with proinflammatory cytokine gene expression in mice exposed to LPS. When proinflammatory cytokine expression in spleen was evaluated in mice injected ip with 4 mg/kg LPS over an 8-h period, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL)-1beta, and IL-6 mRNAs were elevated up to 5-, 6-, and 300-fold, respectively, over vehicle controls.

Based on the known effects of glucocorticoids, it was hypothesized that the combined exposure to LPS and VT targets immature lymphocyte populations. To test this hypothesis, we quantified the effects of VT and LPS on apoptosis induction in T lymphocyte subsets in thymus and B lymphocyte subsets in Peyer's patches and bone marrow.

To test this hypothesis, mice were first treated with a single oral dose of VT and then analyzed for MAPK phosphorylation in the spleen. As little as 1 mg/kg of VT induced JNK 1/2, ERK 1/2, and p38 phosphorylation with maximal effects being observed at 5 to 100 mg/kg of VT.
