A distinct pattern of Olig2-positive cellular distribution in papillary glioneuronal tumors: a manifestation of the oligodendroglial phenotype?

Mixed neuronal-glial tumors of the central nervous system display a wide spectrum of differentiation. Among them, the papillary glioneuronal tumor (PGNT) is characterized by pseudopapillary structures composed of astroglial cells covering hyalinized vessels, and by neurocytic, ganglioid and ganglion cells. In addition, a "nonspecific" cell type, not similar to either astrocytes or neurocytes, has been recognized since the initial reports.

Diagnostic value of measuring liver volume for detecting occult hepatic metastases from colorectal or gastric cancer.

Some studies have shown reduced portal blood flow in patients with occult hepatic metastases, which may lead to decreased liver volume. A retrospective study was conducted in patients undergoing curative resection for colorectal (n = 63) or gastric (n = 52) cancer. The ratio of the preoperative computed tomography (CT)-estimated liver volume to the standard liver volume (CV/SV ratio) was calculated.

Phosphorylated p38MAPK specific antibodies cross-react with sarkosyl-insoluble hyperphosphorylated tau proteins.

Neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) accumulated in Alzheimer's diseases and related disorders contain hyperphosphorylated tau and display immunoreactivity for active forms of various kinases. To understand the role of p38MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) in NFT formation, we have studied a transgenic (Tg) mouse model of tauopathy, JNPL3, that expresses P301L mutant tau, and bigenic mice, TAPP, generated by cross-breeding of JNPL3 with Tg2576 mice. Age-matched non-Tg mice (NTg), wild-type human tau Tg mice (JN25), and Tg2576 mice were used as controls.

Co-localization of glycogen synthase kinase-3 with neurofibrillary tangles and granulovacuolar degeneration in transgenic mice.

Transgenic mice expressing human tau with P301L missense mutation (JNPL3) develop progressive amyotrophy, neurofibrillary degeneration, and neuronal loss. Mating of JNPL3 with transgenic mice expressing mutant amyloid precursor protein (Tg2576) leads to bigenic (TAPP) mice with enhanced neurofibrillary pathology. TAPP and JNPL3 mice were studied with immunocytochemistry and immunoblotting with antibodies to glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GKS3) to determine whether the development of tauopathy is associated with activation or increased expression of GSK3, and when the observed changes occur with respect to neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation.

Mineral characteristics of the leaves of 166 plant species with different phylogeny in the temperate region.

The P-N regression coefficient was moderate in Magnoliales, Coniferopsidae, Pteridophyta, and Asterids, but very high in Caryophyllids, and very low in Rosids. The K-N regression coefficient in trees remained constant regardless of evolution, and that in grasses was high except for Rosids compared with that in trees. The coefficient was very high in Caryophyllids and was very low in Rosids.

Mineral characteristics of leaves of plants from different phylogeny grown in various soil types in the temperate region.

The objective of this research was to analyze selected minerals in leaves of plants, belonging to 166 species growing in alluvial, low pH, brown forest and serpentine soils. Mineral characteristics of the soils involved were also determined. For the macronutrients, in trees grown in alluvial soil, N, P, Ca, and Mg concentrations of leaves were higher in recently evolved plants than in plants with a longer period of evolution; K concentration remained constant regardless of evolution.

Nutritional characteristics of the leaves of native plants growing in adverse soils of humid tropical lowlands.

Acid sulfate, peat, sandy podzolic, and saline soils are widely distributed in the lowlands of Thailand and Malaysia. The nutrient concentrations in the leaves of plants grown in these type of soils were studied with the aim of developing a nutritional strategy for adapting to such problem soils. In sago and oil palms that were well-adapted to peat soil, the N, P, and K concentrations were the same in the mature leaves, while the Ca, Mg, Na, and Fe concentrations were higher in the mature leaves of the oil palm than of the sago palm.

The L266V tau mutation is associated with frontotemporal dementia and Pick-like 3R and 4R tauopathy.

We report a case of rapidly progressive frontotemporal dementia presenting at age 33 years. At autopsy there was severe atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes. Tau-positive Pick bodies, which ultrastructurally were composed of straight filaments, were present, accompanied by severe neuronal loss and gliosis.

Colocalization of tau and alpha-synuclein epitopes in Lewy bodies.

The major protein constituent of Lewy bodies (LBs), the pathological hallmark of Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, is considered to be alpha-synuclein, but other proteins, in particular the microtubule-associated protein tau, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of LBs. Tau is the major structural component of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Both direct immunochemical studies of partially purified LBs and indirect immunohistochemical studies have suggested that LBs may contain tau, but most of these studies were based upon a single tau antibody, and immunologic cross-reactivity was not completely excluded.

Selective neurofibrillary degeneration of the hippocampal CA2 sector is associated with four-repeat tauopathies.

The CA2 sector of the hippocampus is relatively resistant to neurofibrillary tangles in aging and Alzheimer disease; however, some cases have selective neurofibrillary degeneration in CA2 with sparing of the more vulnerable CA1 sector. Cases such as this do not fit in the Braak and Braak staging scheme and can be considered to have an atypical pattern of neurofibrillary degeneration. We identified 24 atypical cases with an average age at death of 78.

A clinicopathological study of vascular progressive supranuclear palsy: a multi-infarct disorder presenting as progressive supranuclear palsy.

Background: Clinical features suggesting a diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) include early falls, axial rigidity, vertical supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, and levodopa unresponsiveness. When these clinical features are present, the diagnosis is almost always PSP, yet vascular disease sometimes has a similar presentation, referred to as vascular PSP.

Objective: To evaluate clinical and pathologic features of cases of vascular PSP submitted to a PSP brain bank.

Occurrence and comparison of the expressed keratins in cultured human fibroblasts, endothelial cells and their sarcomas.

We investigated keratin (K) expression in cultured fibroblasts, endothelial cells and their sarcomas by using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and electron microscopy techniques. Although the fibroblast and endothelial cell lines were derived from mesenchyme, we confirmed Ks in both cell lines. The K in two cultured cell lines consisted of K14 and K16, together with vimentin.

Pelvic exenteration and sacral resection for locally advanced primary and recurrent rectal cancer.

Purpose: The only possibility of a surgical cure in patients with locally advanced primary or recurrent rectal cancer would be an extended resection such as pelvic exenteration and sacral resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and survival benefits of these procedures.

Methods: Between 1988 and 1999, 64 patients with locally advanced primary or recurrent rectal cancer underwent abdominoperineal resection, with sacral resection in 9 patients, anterior pelvic exenteration in 8 patients, total pelvic exenteration in 27 patients, and total pelvic exenteration with sacral resection in 20 patients.

Argyrophilic grain disease is a sporadic 4-repeat tauopathy.

Argyrophilic grain disease (AGD) was first reported as an adult-onset dementia, but recent studies have emphasized personality change, emotional imbalance, and memory problems as clinical features of AGD. AGD is characterized by spindle- or comma-shaped argyrophilic grains in the neuropil of entorhinal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala. Immunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibodies specific to tau isoforms with four (4R) or three (3R) repeats in the microtubule-binding domain showed immunostaining of grains with 4R, but not 3R, tau antibodies, suggesting that AGD was a 4R tauopathy.

Patterns of pelvic invasion are prognostic in the treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer.

Background: Local recurrence of rectal cancer after curative resection remains a difficult clinical problem. The aim of this study was to elucidate prognostic risk factors after resection of recurrent cancer.

Methods: Between January 1983 and December 1999, 83 patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer were studied retrospectively for survival benefit by re-resection.

Squamous cell carcinoma arising in chronic perianal pyoderma a case report and review of Japanese literature.

We report a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma developing from fistules of chronic perianal pyoderma in a 49-year-old Japanese man. He first noticed an abscess and nodule on his buttocks and perianal area 21 year previously (at the age of 28); the fistules formed later. These fistules were surgically removed, and an artificial anus was constructed 14 years ago (at the age of 35) in our hospital, when a histopathological examination revealed no malignant changes.

6-Substituted 2,2-bis(fluoromethyl)-benzopyran-4-carboxamide K+ channel openers.

In the course of our study to find an ideal antihypertensive potassium channel opener (KCO), N-(2-cyanoethyl)-2,2-bis(fluoromethyl)-6-pentafluoroethyl-2H-1-ben zopyran-4-carboxamide (13f, KC-515) showed a highly potent, slow and long-lasting antihypertensive effect with reduced reflex tachycardia, together with the beneficial effects of KCO such as improvement in lipid metabolism. These profiles identify KC-515 as a potential candidate. In conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), the onset of the hypotensive effect of KC-515 (13f) was gradual and the maximum response was attained at around 6 h after dosing.

Basal cell carcinoma within vulvar Paget's disease.

An 85-year-old Japanese woman had noticed erythema on her vulvar region 3 years before. The erythema gradually increased in size and followed erosion and ulceration with pigmentation on the edge of the erythema. A skin biopsy from the pigmented area showed large round cells with ample cytoplasm, which formed nests or glandular structures.

Pretibial myxedema with Graves' disease: a case report and review of Japanese literature.

We report a case of pretibial myxedema with Graves' disease in an 18-year-old Japanese woman. The physical examination revealed waxy indurated plaques with prominent hair follicle openings and nonpitting edema disseminated on her lower legs. Histology from an edematous lesion revealed that the dermis was markedly thickened with abundant mucin, especially hyaluronic acid, and the collagen fibers in this portion were splitting up into fibrils.

Synthesis and vasorelaxant activity of 2-fluoromethylbenzopyran potassium channel openers.

The synthesis and vasorelaxant activity of 2-fluoromethylbenzopyran potassium channel openers are described. These (2-fluoromethyl) derivatives displayed smooth muscle relaxant activities comparable to or more potent than the corresponding 2-methyl analogues.

Lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis infantilis.

Aim: To describe the clinical features of lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis infantilis (LCAI) with special attention to the erythema which is seen around the depressed lesion.

Background: LCAI is a rare disorder which occurs mainly in Asian people, particularly in Japanese; it usually begins as an erythematous macule which subsequently expands centrifugally and leaves a central depression. However, the erythema has been seldom documented in detail.

Sister Joseph's nodule: a case report and review of the Japanese literature.

We report a case of metastatic carcinoma on the umbilicus, which is known as Sister Joseph's nodule. A 65-year-old man with the chief complaint of a painful nodule on the umbilicus was referred to our hospital. Histopathological examination revealed moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma in the dermis.

Chilblain lupus erythematosus of Hutchinson responding to surgical treatment: a report of two patients with anti-Ro/SS-A antibodies.

We report two patients with chilblain lupus erythematosus of Hutchinson (CL) who responded to surgical treatment. One of them was a 72-year-old woman (case 1), and the other a 62-year-old man (case 2). We attempted to treat these patients by excising the lesions and subsequently performing full-thickness free skin grafting, using skin from the abdominal region.

Competitive polymerase chain reaction for the quantification of N-myc gene copy number in neuroblastoma.

An absolute quantification method for the N-myc gene copy number of neuroblastoma specimens was established by applying the competitive polymerase chain reaction (cPCR).
