To clarify the involvement of serine proteases in the development of allergic airway inflammation, we investigated the effect of nafamostat mesilate, a serine protease inhibitor, in a murine model of allergic asthma. Mice were sensitized to ovalbumin (OA) with alum and then exposed to 1% OA for 30 min, three times every 4th day. Nafamostat mesilate was administered orally for 10 days during the allergen challenge.

In this manuscript, we describe a case of lupus nephritis with diffuse podocytic infolding in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). A 23-year-old woman presenting with proteinuria, leukopenia, a high value of antinuclear antibody, and positive for anti-dsDNA and anti-Sm antibodies was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. A renal biopsy was performed which showed diffuse change in the GBM and focal segmental mesangial hypercellularity under light microscopy.

Objectives: This study examined the effect of changes in psychosocial workplace characteristics on weight gain and abdominal obesity.

Methods: Twice, at an interval of 6 years, the authors conducted examinations of job demand-control-support and measurements of body mass index and waist circumference among 2200 men and 1371 women aged 30-53 years and working in a factory. The scores of the psychosocial work characteristics in each examination were dichotomized at the median values for the men and women separately and then categorized into three groups as follows: group I: low score in both the first and second examinations, group II: low score in the first examination and high score in the second (or high at the first and low at the second), and group III: high in both the first and second examinations.

Cochlin (encoded by COCH) constitutes 70% of non-collagenous protein in the inner ear, and the expression of cochlin is highly specific to the inner ear. Eleven missense mutation and one in-frame deletion have been reported in the COCH gene, causing hereditary progressive sensorineural hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction, DFNA9. These data imply that cochlin should bear an essential and crucial role in the inner ear function.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive muscle-wasting disease that causes respiratory or cardiac failure and results in death at about 20 years of age. An animal model of DMD, the mdx mouse, is commonly used to estimate dystrophic pathology. In chronic peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy, peritoneal permeability is gradually enhanced over the duration of the therapeutic course, leading to a grave decline in the therapeutic efficiency. In recent years, a novel therapy (CD therapy), which integrates PD therapy with hemodialysis therapy, is being applied to end-stage PD patients to complement the decline of therapeutic efficiency caused by the grave degeneration of the peritoneal tissue. To realize a harmonious introduction of the CD therapy, this study developed a useful index (KAu/c), which evaluates both therapeutic efficiency and degeneration of peritoneal tissue.

The present study examined the relationship between genetic combinations of the C1429T polymorphism in the G-protein beta-3 subunit (GNB3) gene and the A1330V polymorphism in the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) gene and the risk of hypercholesterolaemia in Japanese workers. The present study included observations from 1997 to 2002 in 927 males and 662 females who were not hypercholesterolaemic on entry. The endpoint was the development of hypercholesterolaemia, defined as a total cholesterol level > or =240 mg/dl.

To find a surrogate marker to obtain optimal dialysis delivery from the viewpoint of nutrition, 180 maintenance hemodialysis patients (109 males/71 females) were enrolled between October 1999 and June 2006 at our kidney center.
