Background: Inguinal hernia develops as one of the common complications after robotic or laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RP). Transabdominal preperitoneal patch plasty (TAPP) for an inguinal hernia after RP is difficult to perform due to postoperative severe adhesions in the preperitoneal cavity. We have introduced a high peritoneal incision approach (HPIA) in TAPP for inguinal hernia patients in whom peritoneal dissection is difficult due to severe adhesions after RP.

A 78-year-old man with dyspnea was referred to our hospital for the treatment of transverse colon cancer with duodenal invasion. [Role of peritoneovenous shunt therapy in end-of-life care of refractory malignant ascites cases].

The short- and long-term outcomes of 34 patients with refractory malignant ascites who underwent peritoneovenous shunt (PVS) therapy were retrospectively reviewed. The primary disease was gastrointestinal cancer in 31 patients and gynecologic cancer in 3 patients. Regarding performance status, 21 patients had Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (PS) 2 and 13 patients were PS 3;thus, many were in a poor general condition.

The lack of tension at the anastomosis site and the blood flow of the gastric conduit are important to prevent anastomotic leakage in the anastomosis of the esophagogastric conduit. This study reports a gastric conduit stump closure method using Endo GIA™ Radial Reload in end-to-side anastomosis of the esophagogastric conduit, especially focusing on blood flow. A 4-cm conduit was created to ensure an intramural vascular network.

A modulatory effect of L-arginine supplementation on anticancer effects of chemoimmunotherapy in colon cancer-bearing aged mice.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and regulatory T cells (Tregs) are increased in cancer-bearing aged hosts. Arginase-I in MDSCs degrades L-arginine, an amino acid required for T cell activation and proliferation. In this study, we compared the therapeutic efficacy of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/oxaliplatin (L-OHP) and cyclophosphamide (CP) between young and aged colon cancer-bearing mice.

A safe and simple technique for nasogastric tube insertion in patients with thoracic esophageal cancer surgery.

Severe hypoglycaemia under abemaciclib administration in a patient with breast cancer: A case report.

The current study reports the case of an 80-year-old woman who experienced severe hypoglycaemia after abemaciclib administration, with a recovery time of ~46 h. Abemaciclib is a cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor that is used to treat metastatic breast cancer. A side effect of abemaciclib administration is an increase in creatinine levels.

Immunogenic chemotherapy in two mouse colon cancer models.

In this study, we examined the anticancer effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and oxaliplatin (L-OHP), which are standard chemotherapeutic drugs for colon cancer, combined with cyclophosphamide (CP) in two mouse colon cancer models (CT26 and MC38 colon adenocarcinoma models). In the CT26 model, two injections of 5-FU/L-OHP and CP significantly suppressed the growth of subcutaneously established CT26 tumors compared with either 5-FU/L-OHP or CP, without a significant loss of body weight.

Objective: Our goal was to evaluate the long-term results of vein bypass grafts for axillary artery occlusion, specifically those placed extra-anatomically to prevent arterial injury in pitchers.

Methods: With the greater saphenous veins used as the selected conduit, arterial bypass grafts were routed anterior to the pectoralis minor muscle in four baseball pitchers who had occlusion of the axillary artery. We performed a follow-up in excess of 10 years with evaluations of the bypass grafts by ultrasonic duplex scan and magnetic resonance angiography.

A challenging treatment for an ischaemic ulcer in a patient with Buerger's disease: vascular reconstruction and local flap coverage.

An ischaemic heel ulcer in a patient with Buerger's disease was reconstructed using an in situ saphenous vein graft combined with a local flap. The bypass was sufficient to restore blood supply to the ischaemic limb but a flap was necessary to cover the persistent heel ulcer, which remained after revascularisation. One month after bypass surgery the ulcer was debrided and the resulting defect was covered with a lateral supramalleolar flap.

A novel interstitial deletion of KAL1 in a Japanese family with Kallmann syndrome.

We identified a novel interstitial deletion that spanned from exons 5 to 10 of KAL1 in two Japanese brothers with X-linked Kallmann syndrome (KS; MIM no. 308700). Both brothers had hypogonadism, unilateral renal agenesis, and disturbance of the sense of smell, but they had no other neurological manifestations, including mental disturbance.

Increased theophylline metabolism in the menstrual phase of healthy women.

Background: We previously reported on a Japanese woman with premenstrual asthma whose serum theophylline concentration was lower before the onset of her menstrual period. We evaluated the clearance of theophylline in each phase of her menstrual cycle and found an increase in clearance in the premenstrual and menstrual phases.

Objective: This study was designed to investigate whether changes in theophylline clearance may occur with the menstrual cycle in nonasthmatic women.
