Suspected Postpartum Depression Revealed to be CSF1R-Related Leukoencephalopathy: A Case Report.

Introduction: This is a case of a 32-year-old woman who developed postpartum depression (PPD). She became anxious and depressive about caring for her child, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) test showed a score of 9 at 2 weeks after delivery, and at 7 months postpartum, she presented with major melancholic depression followed by mild cognitive decline without any neurological symptoms except cluttering speech.

Case Presentation: Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging showed confluent fluid-attenuated inversion recovery hyperintensities in the periventricular and frontal deep white matter, with multiple spotty calcifications in the frontal white matter by cerebral CT.

Evaluation of quercetin as a potential cytoprotector against acetaldehyde using the cultured hepatocyte model with aldehyde dehydrogenase isozyme deficiency.

Protective effect of quercetin against acetaldehyde was evaluated using the cultured hepatocyte models with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) isozyme deficiency (aldh2-kd and aldh1a1-kd). The quercetin-induced cytoprotection against acetaldehyde in the ALDH1A1-deficient mutant (aldh1a1-kd) was weaker than that in the wild type. Furthermore, quercetin did not enhance the ALDH activity in aldh1a1-kd cells, suggesting that ALDH1A1 is involved in quercetin-induced cytoprotection.

Sialyl Lewis X Defines an Activated and Functional Regulatory T Cell Subpopulation in Mice.

Attempts have been made to elucidate the functional markers of regulatory T cells (Tregs), CD4+Foxp3+ T cells with an immunosuppressive function. Sialyl Lewis X (sLex), a tetrasaccharide Ag, is involved in leukocyte trafficking as selectin ligands and is a marker of highly differentiated Tregs in humans. However, the importance of sLex in murine Tregs remains unknown.

Live tracking of basal stem cells of the epidermis during growth, homeostasis and injury response in zebrafish.

Basal stem cells of the epidermis continuously differentiate into keratinocytes and replenish themselves via self-renewal to maintain skin homeostasis. Numerous studies have attempted to reveal how basal cells undergo differentiation or self-renewal; however, this has been hampered by a lack of robust basal cell markers and analytical platforms that allow single-cell tracking. Here, we report that zebrafish integrin beta 4 is a useful marker for basal cell labelling, irrespective of the body region, stage and regenerative status.

Safety of arterial catheterization using the distal radial approach in intensive care unit management: A pilot study.

Background: Arterial catheter (A-line) is essential for managing severely ill patients, and the radial artery is the most common insertion site in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, many accidental removals occur because the insertion site of A-line in the traditional radial approach (TRA) overlaps with the joint flexion. Recent reports have shown no significant difference in the complication rates between coronarography using the distal radial approach (DRA) and that using TRA.

Effect of Astaxanthin on the Expression and Activity of Aquaporin-3 in Skin in an In-Vitro Study.

Astaxanthin (3,3'-dihydroxy-β,β-carotene-4,4'-dione) is a red lipophilic pigment with strong antioxidant action. Oral or topical administration of astaxanthin has been reported to improve skin function, including increasing skin moisture. In this study, we examined the mechanism by which astaxanthin improves skin function by focusing on the water channel aquaporin-3 (AQP3), which plays important roles in maintaining skin moisture and function.

Importance of asparagine residues at positions 13 and 26 on the amino-terminal domain of human somatostatin receptor subtype-5 in signalling.

N-linked oligosaccharides or asparagine residues are often involved in G protein-coupled receptor functions. Focusing on Asn13 and Asn26 positioned on N-linked glycosylation motifs in the amino-terminal domain of human somatostatin receptor subtype-5 (hSSTR5), we performed site-directed mutagenesis and evaluated the mutants by using yeast cells as the host strain. This is because analysing the complicated signalling in mammalian cell lines is simplified by the utilization of the monopolistic pheromone signalling pathway in yeast.

Control of signalling properties of human somatostatin receptor subtype-5 by additional signal sequences on its amino-terminus in yeast.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is known as an available host for human G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) ligand screening. Although several types of yeast signal sequences (SS) attached with the GPCRs could improve their productivities and facilitate transportation of the GPCRs to the yeast plasma membrane, the effects of additional SS on ligand-specific signalling functions of GPCRs are not reported. Here, we demonstrated the controlling signalling properties by addition of SS using engineered yeast as a host.

Compact electrostatic levitator for diffraction measurements with a two axis diffractometer and a laboratory x-ray source.

A compact electrostatic levitator was developed for the structural analysis of high-temperature liquids by x-ray diffraction methods. The size of the levitator was 200 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height and can be set up on a two axis diffractometer with a laboratory x-ray source, which is very convenient in performing structural measurements of high-temperature liquids. In particular, since the laboratory x-ray source allows a great amount of user time, preliminary or challenging experiments can be performed with trial and error, which prepares and complements synchrotron x-ray experiments.

[Clinical study of voiding disorders in patients with cerebrovascular accidents].

Cystometry and urethral pressure profile were determined in 41 patients (29 males and 12 females) with voiding disorders resulting from cerebrovascular accidents within one year after the episode. By clinical symptoms, they were classified into 3 groups, urge incontinence (14 patients, 34%), pollakisuria (10 patients, 24%) and dysuria (17 patients, 41%). Cystometrogram were classified into 3 types, hyperactive bladder (31 patients, 76%), normal bladder (5 patients, 12%) and hypoactive bladder (5 patients, 12%).

[Familial primary intracranial malignant lymphoma].

A 76-year-old female developed depression and loss of appetite. On admission, in June of 1987, she was disoriented. Computed tomography (CT) revealed enhanced masses without perifocal edema in the cerebellar vermis and left occipital lobe.

[A giant cell glioblastoma--a case report].

Discussed is an 8-year-old girl with a history of convulsive seizures. A sharply demarcated tumor, measuring 3 X 4 cm, was located in the right frontal lobe. The mass grey and cystic in the center, and microscopic specimen demonstrated bizarre, irregular, giant cell with a long vesicular nuclei and spindle-shaped cell.

[Primary intrasellar germinoma with amenorrhea--a case report].

A 22-year-old woman with a history of headaches and secondary amenorrhea is reported. Her physical examination showed a visual acuity loss. An endocrine evaluation revealed hypopituitarism and an elevated level of serum prolactin.

[Diffuse metastatic leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (DMLC)].

Diffuse metastatic leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (DMLC) due to systemic cancer has been diagnosed clinically in 7 patients. The primary sites involved were the stomach, the lung, and the breast. In all patients, there was progressive clinical deterioration, the average survival after diagnosis being 18 weeks.

[Brain metastases of colorectal cancer--a case report].

Metastatic brain tumors from colorectal cancers are relatively rate. In previous reports, the incidence, ranged from 1.9 to 3.

An ultrastructural study of mineralization in craniopharyngiomas.

In eight cases of adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma examined ultrastructurally special attention was paid to the process of mineralization. The tumors were usually composed of neoplastic epithelial cells and fibrous connective tissue stroma. Islands of keratinized cells were frequently observed in the epithelial cell zone.

[Extracranial recurrence of sphenoidal ridge meningioma--a case report].

A 46-year-old woman with right sphenoidal ridge meningioma (alar type), which recurred in the orbit and the pterygomaxillary fossa three years after total removal, is presented. Histologically the first examination showed transitional type meningioma. She noticed right exophthalmos, ophthalmoplegia, visual disturbance and swelling of the right side of the face three years later.
