Wound infection after elective laparoscopic surgery for colorectal carcinoma.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate various clinical parameters that would influence the occurrence of wound infection (WI) in elective laparoscopic surgery (LS) for colorectal carcinoma.

Methods: The study included 290 patients who underwent LS between June 2001 and December 2005. WI was diagnosed within 30 days of the operation, and both superficial and deep incision surgical site infection were evaluated together.

Secretory phospholipase A2s (sPLA2s) contribute to the hydrolysis of phospholipid. Among them, sPLA2-IIA, -V, and -X have been regarded as enhancers of lipid accumulation in arterial intima. However, the distribution and production of the other types of sPLA2 in human aortic wall remain unclear.

Seasonal changes in glycerol content and cold hardiness in two ecotypes of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, exposed to the environment in the Shonai district, Japan.

The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, is divided into at least two ecotypes in Japan, the Shonai ecotype (SN) which is distributed in the northern part of Japan, and the Saigoku ecotype (SG) which is distributed in the southwestern region. Cold hardiness is positively correlated with the level of glycerol in both ecotypes. To investigate whether ecological distribution affects glycerol accumulation and cold hardiness development in these two ecotypes, overwintering larvae of the SN and SG ecotypes were concurrently exposed to the Shonai district.

Animal and yeast nucleolin function as global regulators of ribosome synthesis, and their expression is tightly linked to cell proliferation. Although Arabidopsis contains two genes for nucleolin, AtNuc-L1 is the predominant if not only form of the protein found in most tissues, and GFP-AtNuc-L1 fusion proteins were targeted to the nucleolus. Expression of AtNuc-L1 was strongly induced by sucrose or glucose but not by non-metabolizable mannitol or 2-deoxyglucose.

[A case of apocrine adenocarcinoma suspected as an axillary lymph node metastasis from cecal cancer].

The patient was a 69-year-old male. He had a 2-year history of subcutaneous tumor in the left axilla. Biopsy of the tumor showed the features of metastatic adenocarcinoma.

Background: The loss of sonic hedgehog is an early change that occurs in the mucosa prior to neoplastic transformation and correlates with the type of intestinal metaplasia. Aberrant expression of CDX has also been shown to correlate with the development of intestinal metaplasia.

Aim: To examine CDX2 expression in the non-cancerous mucosa of patients with gastric cancer and compared it to CDX2 expression in controls with intestinal metaplasia.

Small extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma causing severe hypertension in an elderly patient.

We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with severe hypertension caused by an extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma. The tumor was detected by 131I metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy and it was found to be small (2 cm ø) by enhanced CT. After the extirpation of the tumor, the blood pressure of the patient immediately normalized.

The vascular resting tone of the porcine basilar artery appears to be mostly maintained by a balance between spontaneously released nitric oxide (NO) from endothelial cells and thromboxane (TX) A(2) from endothelial and smooth muscle cells. However the precise role of the interaction between the above two substances in the control of vascular tone is unclear. We attempted to clarify the interaction between NO and TXA(2) using cultured porcine basilar arterial endothelial cells.

Resection of over 290 polyps during emergency surgery for four intussusceptions with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: Report of a case.

A 41-year-old male patient with aggravated epigastralgia and nausea was admitted to Central Aizu General Hospital in February 1997. His past history showed a colonic polyp and anemia in the fourth decade. The patient looked healthy, but showed abdominal distension and tenderness, and pigmented lips.

Abdominal sacral resection for posterior pelvic recurrence of rectal carcinoma: analyses of prognostic factors and recurrence patterns.

Background: Local recurrence of rectal cancer presents challenging problems. Although abdominal sacral resection (ASR) provides pain control, survival prolongation, and possibly cure, reported morbidity and mortality are still high, and survival is still low. Thus, appropriate patient selection and adjuvant therapy based on prognostic factors and recurrence patterns are necessary.

Histological risk markers for non-cardia early gastric cancer. Pattern of mucin expression and gastric cancer.

There are limited data regarding the prognostic value of the pattern of mucin expression in IM. To examine the role of the type of IM and pattern of mucin expression in IM as histological risk markers of gastric cancer, 80 patients with a history of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for early gastric cancer and 80 sex and age-matched controls were studied. Serum levels of pepsinogen (PG) were measured by RIA, and MUC2, MUC5AC and MUC6 were evaluated immunohistochemically.

Second hepatectomy for recurrent colorectal liver metastasis: analysis of preoperative prognostic factors.

Background: Second hepatectomy is a potentially curative treatment for patients with hepatic recurrence of colorectal cancer. However, there is still no consensus about the patient selection criteria for second hepatectomy under these circumstances, and the factors affecting prognosis after second hepatectomy remain uncertain.

Methods: Clinicopathologic data for 111 consecutive patients with colorectal liver metastasis who underwent second hepatectomy at a single institution between 1985 and 2004, and for whom complete clinicopathologic reports were available, were subjected to univariate and multivariate analyses.

A new method of diagnosing gastric intestinal metaplasia: narrow-band imaging with magnifying endoscopy.

Background And Study Aims: With endoscopy, there is a high rate of interobserver variability in the identification of gastric intestinal metaplasia, and the endoscopic findings correlate poorly with the histological findings. Previous studies by our group investigating the use of a narrow-band imaging system with magnifying endoscopy (NBI-ME) in the gastric mucosa suggested that the appearance of a light blue crest (LBC) on the epithelial surface may be a distinctive endoscopic finding associated with the presence of intestinal metaplasia. The aim of the present study was to clarify the value of NBI-ME for diagnosing gastric intestinal metaplasia.

A case of resected huge ileocolonic mesenteric liposarcoma which responded to pre-operative chemotherapy using doxorubicin, cisplatin and ifosfamide.

Primary mesenteric liposarcoma is a rare entity that has been reported only 14 times in English literature. The treatment strategy for mesenteric liposarcoma is, if no distant metastases are detected, surgical resection with a wide surgical margin, often followed by radiation and/or adjuvant chemotherapy for high-risk patients. However, the efficacy of pre-operative chemotherapy is unknown.

The human renal lymphatics under normal and pathological conditions.

Aims: The renal lymphatics have not been fully documented in humans. The aim of this study was to clarify the morphology of the human renal lymphatic system under normal and pathological conditions by immunohistochemistry using anti-D2-40 antibody.

Methods And Results: Normal and pathological renal tissues obtained at autopsy as well as nephrectomy specimens with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were used.

Resection of a cardiac tumor extending into the inferior vena cava presenting as Budd-Chiari syndrome.

This report describes the successful treatment of a case of cardiac adenocarcinoma with the clinical presentation as Budd-Chiari syndrome. Complete surgical excision of the atriocaval mass was successfully achieved under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. Histopathological diagnosis of this tumor was tubular adenocarcinoma with positive immunostaining by carcinoembrionic antigen.

Nitric oxide-induced accumulation of lipofuscin-like materials is caused by inhibition of cathepsin S.

To determine whether nitric oxide (NO) is involved in accumulation of lipofuscin-like material (LFM) in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and if this formation is related to NO-mediated modification of cathepsin S (cat S). RPE cell cultures were fed once every day with porcine photoreceptor outer segments (POS) in the presence of NO-donor [S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) or NOC18] for 2 weeks. LFM autofluorescence within the cells was measured by fluorophotometric flow cytometry (FACS).

Conformation of solvent N,N-dimethylpropionamide in the coordination sphere of the zinc(II) ion studied by Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Solvation structure of the zinc(II) ion in N,N-dimethylpropionamide (DMPA) was studied by Raman spectroscopy at varying temperature and by quantum mechanical calculations. No significant ion-pair formation was found for the Zn(ClO4)2 solution in the molality range m(Zn) < 1.5 mol kg(-1), and the solvation number of the zinc(II) ion was determined to be 4, indicating that 6-coordination of DMPA is sterically hindered.

Flat colorectal neoplasms and the impact of the revised Vienna Classification on their reporting: a case-control study in UK and Japanese patients.

Objective: The prevalence and interpretation of flat colorectal neoplasms in the East or West remain highly variable. Several factors may contribute to this variability including differences in reporting techniques between Japanese and Western histopathologists when lesions are classified. The aims of this study were (i) to determine the frequency and characteristics of flat colorectal neoplasms in British and Japanese patients, (ii) to examine whether histopathological discrepancies exist between Western and Japanese-trained pathologists applying conventional classification methods and (iii) to determine the impact of the revised Vienna Classification on any differences observed.

Longterm outcomes after endoscopic mucosal resection for early gastric cancer.

Background: Despite the widespread use of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) in patients with early gastric cancer (EGC), its longterm outcomes have not been fully evaluated. Our aim was to evaluate longterm survival after complete EMR for EGC.

Methods: From patients who underwent EMR between 1978 and 1996 at our center, we enrolled 131 patients with differentiated mucosal EGCs less than 2 cm (without ulcerative change) that had been completely removed by EMR.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary cancer in the liver. Liver invasion of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is also often observed. But simultaneous existence of HCC and NHL in a liver is extremely rare.

ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation with anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies, intravenous immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis without splenectomy: a case report.

A 24-yr-old man was admitted to our hospital for ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation. His blood type was O, and the donor's (his father's) blood type was B. The recipient had pancytopenia, splenomegaly, splenorenal shunts and esophageal varices due to congenital hepatic fibrosis.

Conformational equilibrium of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide anion of a room-temperature ionic liquid: Raman spectroscopic study and DFT calculations.

The structure of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (TFSI-) in the liquid state has been studied by means of Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Raman spectra of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (EMI+) TFSI- show relatively strong bands arising from TFSI- at about 398 and 407 cm(-1). Interestingly, the 407 cm(-1) band, relative to the 398 cm(-1) one, is appreciably intensified with raising temperature, suggesting that an equilibrium is established between TFSI- conformers in the liquid state.
