We investigated the pathogenesis of a perihilar variant of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis detected by kidney biopsy in a 16-year-old male. The disease was refractory to steroid therapy, and at the second kidney biopsy, abnormal mitochondrial proliferation was newly observed in the podocytes. The patient also developed late-onset hearing loss and had a family history of diabetes, and genetic testing confirmed the mitochondrial DNA mutation 3243A>G (48%).

Background: Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant tumor arising from the olfactory neuroepithelium. The standard of care for ONB is surgical resection; however, detailed treatment protocols vary by institution. Our treatment protocol consists of endoscopic skull base surgery (ESBS) for endoscopically resectable cases and induction chemotherapy followed by craniotomy combined with ESBS for locally advanced cases, with postoperative radiotherapy performed for all cases.

Lymph nodes have contractile structures, but their distribution in a lymph node has been less considered in terms of facilitation of lymph flow. Axillary, inguinal, and mesenteric lymph nodes were collected from mice and human cadavers, and their sections were immunostained for alpha-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) and high molecular weight caldesmon (H-caldesmon). The αSMA-positive cells were localized in the capsule beneath the ceiling epithelium on the afferent side in both mice and humans.

An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator with biventricular pacing was implanted before immunosuppressive therapy to prevent sudden death. Background: Proton range uncertainty has been the main factor limiting the ability of proton therapy to concentrate doses to tumors to their full potential. Ionoacoustic (IA) range verification is an approach to reducing this uncertainty by detecting thermoacoustic waves emitted from an irradiated volume immediately following a pulsed proton beam delivery; however, the signal weakness has been an obstacle to its clinical application. To increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the conventional piezoelectric hydrophone (PH), the detector-sensitive volume needs to be large, but it could narrow the range of available beam angles and disturb real-time images obtained during beam delivery.
