Radiation oncologists currently consider mean dose constraints of <35 Gy for conventionally fractioned radiation therapy (RT), <4 Gy for single fraction stereotactic radiosurgery, and <17.1 or 25 Gy for 3- or 5-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery, respectively, as the standard of care.

Optimization of Cement-Based Mortar Containing Oily Sludge Ash by Response Surface Methodology.

In the industries of petroleum extraction, a large volume of oily sludge is being generated. This waste is usually considered difficult to dispose of, causing environmental and economic issues. This study presented the novel experimental method of manufacturing mortar used in civil construction by cement and oily sludge ash (OSA).

Laser-assisted delivery of synergistic combination chemotherapy in in vivo skin.

The effectiveness of topical drugs for treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer is greatly reduced by insufficient penetration to deep skin layers. Ablative fractional lasers (AFLs) are known to enhance topical drug uptake by generating narrow microchannels through the skin, but information on AFL-drug delivery in in vivo conditions is limited. In this study, we examined pharmacokinetics, biodistribution and toxicity of two synergistic chemotherapy agents, cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), following AFL-assisted delivery alone or in combination in in vivo porcine skin.

Molecular subtype analysis determines the association of advanced breast cancer in Egypt with favorable biology.

Background: Prognostic markers and molecular breast cancer subtypes reflect underlying biological tumor behavior and are important for patient management. Compared to Western countries, women in North Africa are less likely to be prognosticated and treated based on well-characterized markers such as the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and Her2. We conducted this study to determine the prevalence of breast cancer molecular subtypes in the North African country of Egypt as a measure of underlying biological characteristics driving tumor manifestations.

Epstein-Barr virus and Hodgkin's lymphoma in Cairo, Egypt.

Fifty-five consecutive cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL), collected between 1996 and 1998 from Cairo, Egypt, were histologically subtyped, phenotyped, and then studied for the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). We used immunohistochemical stains for EBV latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) and in situ hybridization stains for EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER-1) transcripts. Forty-five cases (82%) had classic HL (cHL), and ten cases (18%) had nodular lymphocyte predominant HL (NLPHL), with each group expressing its typical phenotype.

Trichilemmal cyst involving the skull base.

Background: Trichilemmal cyst (TC) a rare tumour originating from the outer root sheath of the hair follicle particularly in the scalp has never been reported to involve the skull base. Here a case of TC extensively involving the skull base is presented. The neuro-imaging, operative, and pathological features are described.

Disseminated cryptococcosis with cutaneous lesions.

A case of disseminated cryptococcosis in an HIV-negative patient presenting with cutaneous lesions is described for the first time in Egypt. The patient, a 16-year-old male, presented with cough, expectoration, loss of weight, and cutaneous lesions, mainly on the face and trunk. The lesions consisted of vegetating crusted plaques discharging purulent to sanguinous fluid and flattened, shiny, erythematous to brownish plaques.

Evaluation of hepatic fibrosis after oxamniquine therapy of murine schistosomiasis.

Chemical and histological indices of liver fibrosis were measured after eight, 18 and 28 weeks in mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni and treated at eight weeks with oxamniquine, in mice infected with S. mansoni and not treated and in mice not infected with S. mansoni.

Re-examination of Rattus norvegicus as an animal model for Aeromonas-associated enteritis in man.

We have developed an oral feeding model for Aeromonas hydrophila enteritis using Rattus norvegicus with clindamycin pretreatment. All animals in the clindamycin group developed a self-limited, loose stool by day four of feeding. Intestinal examination revealed evidence of enteritis.

Enlarged adenoid and adenoidectomy in adults: endoscopic approach and histopathological study.

Adenoid enlargement is uncommon in adults and because examination of the nasopharynx by indirect posterior rhinoscopy is inadequate, many cases of enlarged adenoid in adults are misdiagnosed and accordingly maltreated. This study was conducted on 35 cases of enlarged adenoid aged between 20 and 42 years. The nasal endoscope was utilized to identify the adenoid mass.

We examined the effect of parasitologic cure of S. mansoni infection on liver fibrosis in mice. Praziquantel, 250 mg/kg body weight, was administered orally to mice 8 weeks after infection with 50 S.

Lipid composition of winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus).

The lipids were extracted from the winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) seed with water-saturated n-butanol. Lipids were separated into groups by preparative TLC on silica gel G. The amount of each lipid type was determined by analysis of the fatty acid constituents in each lipid type.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of head and neck in children.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare condition that tends to occur in the head and neck in children. This disease carried a very poor prognosis until 10 years ago when a multidisciplinary approach (with surgery, therapy and multiple drug chemotherapy) was instituted. In this article a review of the literature on embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is given and three rare cases have been reported; the first involved the palate, the second affected the ear and mastoid, and the third was a case originating in the nasopharynx with orbital involvement.
