Aims: This study aimed to explore how incorporating shared decision-making (SDM) can address recruitment challenges in clinical trials. Specifically, it examines how SDM can align the trial process with patient preferences, enhance patient autonomy and increase active patient participation. Additionally, it identifies potential conflicts between SDM and certain clinical trial aspects, such as randomization or blinding, and proposes solutions to mitigate these issues.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA multidisciplinary approach to the management of tongue cancer is vital for achieving optimal patient outcomes. Nursing and allied health professionals play essential roles within the team. We developed symposia comprising a series of online lectures offering a detailed perspective on the role each discipline and consumer perspective has in the management of patients with tongue cancer.

Buccal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) appears to behave more aggressively than other oral subsites, in particular with regards to regional disease at presentation and regional recurrence. Adequate management of the neck is of the utmost importance but is still the subject of debate. An international multicentre retrospective review of 101 patients treated for T1-T2 buccal SCC was performed.

Materials And Methods: This study is a retrospective cohort analysis of patients treated for head and neck mucoepidermoid carcinoma at the RMH between 2005 and 2022. Patient demographics, treatment, pathology, in particular the AFIP histological grading of the primary tumour, and outcomes were collected and tabulated.
Maxillary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is uncommon. Surgical resection is challenging due to the anatomy, and the role of elective neck dissection (END) is not well-defined. A retrospective cohort study of patients with maxillary OSCC treated with primary surgery between 2007 and 2019 was conducted.

In 2009, the surgical margin protocol was increased from 10 mm to 15 mm. A retrospective review was performed of all patients who underwent treatment for early OTSCC between 2009 and 2016 with a 15-mm surgical margin (n = 142), and these patients were compared to those treated between 1999 and 2008 with a 10-mm surgical margin (n = 78).

The role of postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) is controversial.
Methods: We describe the current literature focusing on the role of PORT in completely resected NSCLC patients with pN2 involvement and reflect on its role in current guidelines.
Background: Maintaining social relationships is a basic human need and particularly essential in old age, including when living in a retirement home. Multiplayer video games can promote positive social interactions among players from different generations while playing. Yet, such facilitation of positive social interactions depends on specific game design.

There have been no prior studies examining the effect of distance to the treatment centre on oral squamous cell carcinoma outcomes in Australia. The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact of travel distance on oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) outcomes. This was a retrospective analysis of 243 patients who received surgical treatment ± adjuvant therapy between 2007 and 2016.

To deal with such complexity, people tend to reduce it by relying on their initial intuition. The downside of this intuitive, subjective way of decision-making is that it is prone to cognitive and emotional biases such as overestimating the quality of its judgements or being influenced by one's current mood.

Due to the rare occurrence of TETs, evidence on optimal treatment is limited. Surgery is the treatment of choice in the management of TETs, while the role of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) remains unresolved.

Somatic mutations and DNA copy number variations (CNVs) in a 68-gene panel and human papilloma virus (HPV) status were interrogated using targeted next-generation sequencing. In the entire cohort, (60%) and (24%) were most frequently mutated, and the most common CNVs were amplifications (9%) and deletions of (5%) and (4%).

Methods: Consecutive patients with OTSCC between 2007 and 2016 were included. The predefined policy of the contralateral neck included neck dissection (ND) where the primary tumor extended/crossed midline or the contralateral neck was involved; and elective nodal irradiation (ENI) where the primary tumor was ≤1 cm from midline/2 cm from tip.
Objectives: To assess the effect of the histological margins (HM) upon locoregional failure (LRF) and overall survival (OS) for oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC).
Materials And Methods: We undertook a retrospective review of 258 patients, across two institutions, treated for OTSCC between 2007 and 2016. A Cox-proportional hazards model was used to compare the relative hazard ratio of HM to the accepted standard of 5 mm margins for LRF and OS.
Background: Current treatment options for stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) consist of different combinations of chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Treatment choices are highly individual decisions, in which adverse events (AEs) are relevant for decision-making. This study aims to analyse reporting of AEs in prospective stage III NSCLC trials, focussing on trials including radiotherapy and/or surgery.

The primary aim of this observational study was to describe the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in 60 consecutive, surgically treated head and neck cancer patients requiring free flap reconstruction and tracheostomy, using both a prospective and a retrospective outcome measure. Secondary aims were to identify risk factors for PPC development, explore the effects of PPC on outcomes, and describe the provision of postoperative physiotherapy in this population. Postoperative pulmonary complications occurred in nine (15%) patients based on the Melbourne Group Scale and 27 (45%) patients based on Health Information Service coding data.

Aim: We describe decision criteria, which for various contexts are only used by a minority of decision makers.
Background: Both age and comorbidity are accepted as significant prognostic factors for adverse perioperative outcomes in major surgery. Elderly patients may be overlooked for radical treatment for fear of poor perioperative outcome. We aim to assess the relationship between age, comorbidities and post-operative outcomes in a tertiary head and neck unit.

A retrospective review of 109 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who underwent mandibular resection was performed. Eighty-three had preoperative computed tomography (CT) imaging and 72 underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

However, understanding of the role of AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 in mediating this response is still rudimentary. Here, we sought to elucidate the APN receptor responsible for limiting liver fibrosis by employing AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 knock-out mice in the carbon tetrachloride (CCl) model of liver fibrosis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFParaganglioma, ameloblastoma and olfactory neuroblastoma are uncommon primary head and neck tumours. When nodal metastases from these tumours occur, they may present later than and with different imaging characteristics compared with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), demonstrating appearances similar to the primary tumour type rather than features typical of metastatic nodal SCC. We present three cases in which imaging characteristics of nodal metastases in paraganglioma, ameloblastoma and olfactory neuroblastoma mimicked the primary tumour and discuss their implications for clinicoradiological follow-up.
