Integrins are expressed in tumor cells and tumor endothelial cells, and likely play important roles in glioma angiogenesis and invasion. We investigated the anti-glioma mechanisms of cilengitide (EMD121974), an αvβ3 integrin inhibitor, utilizing the novel invasive glioma models, J3T-1 and J3T-2. Immunohistochemical staining of cells in culture and brain tumors in rats revealed positive αvβ3 integrin expression in J3T-2 cells and tumor endothelial cells, but not in J3T-1 cells.

We report on a male patient who experienced a previously unreported sequence of cryptogenic West syndrome in infancy and subsequent mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. His complex partial seizures were consistently characterised by motionless staring with brief right eye blinking. Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) showed bilateral temporal spikes which were dominant on the right side.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and analyze overall postoperative results from microvascular decompression (MVD) by combining the cure rate of symptoms with the complication rate. A new scoring system for obtaining objective surgical results from MVD for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and hemifacial spasm (HFS) is proposed to document treatment results using consistent criteria in a standardized manner.

Method: Surgical results combining complications , if any, were obtained from a questionnaire sent to patients who had undergone surgery for TN or HFS in recent years and had been followed-up for more than 1 year after surgery (TN patients, n = 54; HFS patients, n = 81) When surgical outcome is complete resolution of symptoms, the efficacy of surgery (E) is designated E-0, but when moderate symptoms are still persist postoperatively, the score is designated E-2.

This 66-year-old male suffered from massive nasal bleeding with the status of hypovolemic shock. Introduction: Percutaneous transvenous embolization (TVE) using coils is a well-established treatment of cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula (CSdAVF). However, it is sometimes difficult to achieve complete occlusion by coil embolization. In these two cases, we were able to obtain complete angiographic obliteration of the fistulas without complications by means of percutaneous TVE using n-butyl-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) after we failed when TVE using coils.

An 84-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and a brain infarction presented with a rare distal anterior choroidal artery (AChoA) aneurysm not associated with moyamoya disease manifesting as sudden onset of headache caused by intraventricular hemorrhage. Digital subtraction angiography revealed a peripheral aneurysm in the left AChoA located distal to the plexal point and steno-occlusive changes of the proximal left middle cerebral artery (MCA) and the left posterior cerebral artery (PCA). A 78-year-old man presented with a rare massive subarachnoid hematoma (SAH) in the cervical spine after coronary stenting for angina pectoris. Chest pain and electrocardiographic changes were resolved after administration of coronary dilator and coronary stenting, but shoulder pain persisted. Hydrocephalus does not indicate a single clinical entity, but includes a variety of clinicopathological conditions caused by excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) based on the disturbed circulation. Recent progress in prenatal neuroimagings such as MRI and ultrasound echoencephalography on fetus enables to understand clinicopathological conditions of CSF circulation disorder in conjunction with morphological changes in the central nervous system properly. It has been revealed that the CSF dynamics develop in the theory of evolution from the immature brain, as in the animals with the minor CSF pathway predominance, towards matured adult human brain together with the completion of the major CSF pathway: the "Evolution Theory in CSF Dynamics".

Methods: Patients who had undergone therapeutic neuroendoscopy between 2005 and 2009 were included in this study. The main items examined were age; sex; localization of tumor; pathological diagnosis using biopsy; the presence, treatment, and efficacy of treatment of associated hydrocephalus; perioperative complications; activities of daily living (ADL) before and after therapeutic neuroendoscopy; and the presence of dissemination during the postoperative course.

A 11-year-old female with Noonan syndrome presented with occipito-atlantal dislocation and upper cervical cord compression due to C1 dysplasia and basilar invagination. Computed tomography (CT) of the cervical spine showed dysplasia of the C1 posterior arch and bilateral dislocation of the occipito-atlantal joints. A 29-year-old man presented with a rare case of far-out foraminal stenosis with radiculopathy caused by osteophyte formation secondary to an anomalous articulation between the transverse process and the sacral ala. Diagnosis of unilateral far-out foraminal entrapment of the L5 spinal nerve below a transitional vertebra (TV) depended on selective radiculography and nerve root block. Computed tomography after selective radiculography clearly demonstrated foraminal entrapment of the L5 nerve root via the osteophytes.
