The LBX1 gene is located near a single nucleotide polymorphism that is highly associated with susceptibility to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and is considered one of the strongest candidate genes involved in the pathogenesis of this condition. We have previously found that loss of LBX1 from skeletal muscle results not only in spinal deformity but also in lean body mass, suggesting a potential role for LBX1 in energy metabolism. The purpose of the present study was to test this hypothesis by analyzing the phenotype of mice lacking LBX1 in skeletal muscle with a focus on energy metabolism.

A chlorosome, a photosynthetic light-harvesting complex found in green sulfur bacteria, is an aggregate of self-assembled pigments and is optimized for efficient light harvesting and energy transfer under dim-light conditions. In this highly-disordered aggregate, the absorption and transfer of photoexcitation energy are governed by the degree of disorder. To describe the disorder, the number of molecules forming excitons, which is termed exciton delocalization length (EDL), is a relevant parameter because the EDL sensitively changes with the disorder of the constituent molecules.

Discovery of remogliflozin etabonate: A potent and highly selective SGLT2 inhibitor.

We optimized the structure of an active metabolite (1) of WAY-123783, which was obtained from mouse urine after oral administration, to improve selectivity for SGLT2 and oral bioavailability. O-glucoside derivative 24 (remogliflozin etabonate) was subsequently identified as a potent, highly selective, and orally available SGLT2 inhibitor.

Enhanced Stability of Stable Isotopic Gases.

Pure gases and mixtures containing stable isotopes are used in a wide variety of applications including health care, food authentication, geochemistry, and environmental monitoring. It is therefore important to understand the role of moisture, which is one of the most critical impurities in compressed gas mixtures and pure gases, in their stability. Gaseous carbon dioxide (CO) was used as a proxy for the evaluation of the effects of its isotopic composition, when in contact with moisture throughout the depletion of a cylinder's contents, as well as pressure regulation and long-term stability.

The 17-propionate ester group of chlorophyll(Chl)-a in some oxygenic phototrophs was investigated using HPLC. Chls-a esterified with partially dehydrogenated forms of a phytyl group were found in fully grown cells of a diatom, Chaetoceros calcitrans: geranylgeranyl (GG), dihydrogeranylgeranyl (DHGG), and tetrahydrogeranylgeranyl (THGG). Chls-a bearing such esterifying groups were reported to be found only in greening processes of higher plants, and thus these Chls-a have been thought to be biosynthetic precursors for phytylated Chl-a.

Chronic constipation is a highly common functional gastrointestinal disorder that adversely affects patient quality of life. At present, limited therapeutic options are available for the treatment of chronic constipation, which indicates the need for new therapeutic agents. Herein, we report the potential of mizagliflozin, a novel selective sodium glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) inhibitor, for the amelioration of chronic constipation.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are serious conditions and are being diagnosed at an increased rate. The etiology of these hepatic disorders is not clear but involves insulin resistance and oxidative stress. Remogliflozin etabonate (Remo) is an inhibitor of the sodium glucose-dependent renal transporter 2 (SGLT2), and improves insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetics.

First records of tool-set use for ant-dipping by Eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Kalinzu Forest Reserve, Uganda.

Chimpanzees at numerous study sites are known to prey on army ants by using a single wand to dip into the ant nest or column. However, in Goualougo (Republic of Congo) in Central Africa, chimpanzees use a different technique, use of a woody sapling to perforate the ant nest, then use of a herb stem as dipping tool to harvest the army ants. Use of a tool set has also been found in Guinea, West Africa: at Seringbara in the Nimba Mountains and at nearby Bossou.

Role of thermal excitation in ultrafast energy transfer in chlorosomes revealed by two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy.

Chlorosomes are the largest light harvesting complexes in nature and consist of many bacteriochlorophyll pigments forming self-assembled J-aggregates. In this work, we use two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2D-ES) to investigate ultrafast dynamics of excitation energy transfer (EET) in chlorosomes and their temperature dependence. From time evolution of the measured 2D electronic spectra of chlorosomes, we directly map out the distribution of the EET rate among the manifold of exciton states in a 2D energy space.

Optical signals from the epicardial surface of the ventricle or left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP) were recorded during acute global ischemia in 42 Langendorff-perfused guinea pig hearts.

Here we elucidate the presence and the origin of coherent oscillations in chlorosome at cryogenic temperature using 2D electronic spectroscopy. We observe coherent oscillations of multiple frequencies superimposed on the ultrafast amplitude decay of 2D spectra.

Assessment of the loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for rapid diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in pediatric community-acquired pneumonia.
