Article Synopsis
  • ZAP70 plays a significant role in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) by affecting B-cell receptor signaling, which is crucial for the disease's development.
  • Research shows that a notable number of nonmalignant B cells in CLL patients express ZAP70, which is not the case for healthy individuals, indicating a potential early marker of disease progression.
  • The presence of these ZAP70+ normal B cells is linked to autoimmune cytopenia, suggesting that they might contribute to autoimmune complications associated with CLL through autoreactive antibodies.

Potentially toxic plasticizers are commonly added to polyvinyl chloride medical devices for transfusion in order to improve their flexibility and workability. As the plasticizers are not chemically bonded to the PVC, they can be released into labile blood products (LBPs) during storage. Ideally, LBPs would be used in laboratory studies of plasticizer migration from the medical device.

Background: The Etablissement Français du Sang Alsace (EFS Alsace) successively implemented universal use of platelet additive solutions (PASs) and pathogen inactivation (PI) for platelet components (PCs). To assess the impact of these changes, EFS Alsace evaluated PC use, red blood cell (RBC) component use, and transfusion-related adverse events after implementation of these new technologies.

Study Design And Methods: EFS Alsace prospectively collects data on production, distribution, and response to transfusion of all blood components with greater than 99.

Background: Photochemical pathogen inactivation treatment (PCT) of plasma components with amotosalen and UVA has been implemented in Europe. To establish a postapproval safety database, an active hemovigilance (HV) program utilizing an electronic data capture system (EDCS) was initiated.

Study Design And Methods: The response to transfusion was documented after each PCT-plasma transfusion.
