The soil bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti can establish a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with the model legume Medicago truncatula. The rhizobia induce the formation of a specialized root organ called nodule, where they differentiate into bacteroids and reduce atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. Little is known on the mechanisms involved in nodule senescence onset and in bacteroid survival inside the infected plant cells.

Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (fGO), a humanized anti-CD33 monoclonal antibody linked to calicheamicin in combination with intensive chemotherapy gives high response rates in adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients in relapse. However, reduced intensity chemotherapy in combination with fractionated GO has not been tested in aged relapsing patients. Patients from our institution with CD33+ AML aged 55 years or more in first late relapse (≥ 6 months) were proposed participation in a GO compassionate use program.

In Sinorhizobium meliloti, choline is the direct precursor of phosphatidylcholine, a major lipid membrane component in the Rhizobiaceae family, and glycine betaine, an important osmoprotectant. Moreover, choline is an efficient energy source which supports growth. Using a PCR strategy, we identified three chromosomal genes (choXWV) which encode components of an ABC transporter: ChoX (binding protein), ChoW (permease), and ChoV (ATPase).

Background: Our aim was to evaluate oxidative stress parameters on three groups of diabetic patients, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), and insulin-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus (ITDM2), with similar HbA1c value and to determine if insulin's impact on these parameters was the same for IDDM and ITDM2.

Methods: This study has been conducted on 18 IDDM, 55 NIDDM, 27 ITDM2, compared to 12 healthy subjects. Plasmatic concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), fatty acids, total antioxidant status (TAS), alpha-tocopherol, and erythrocyte reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured as well as enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase/reductase.
