Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by microorganisms have a key role in the sedimentary compartment, e.g. promoting aggregation and biostabilisation of sediment particles and increasing chemical reactivity at the water/sediment interface.

Feeding cadmium (II) and selenium (IV) simultaneously to anaerobic granular sludge with the aim of synthesizing cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles induces compositional changes in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) matrix of this sludge. A methanogenic anaerobic granular sludge was repeatedly exposed to Cd(II) (10-50 mg L) and selenite (79 mg L) for 300 days at pH 7.3 and 30 °C in a fed-batch feeding regime for enrichment of Se-reducing bacteria and synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles.

Opuntia ficus-indica that belongs to the Cactaceae family and is a member of Opuntia kind has received increasing research interest for wastewater treatment by flocculation. The objectives of this study were (i) to provide more information regarding the active constituents of Opuntia spp. and (ii) to improve the extracting and using conditions of the flocculant molecules for water treatment.

Background: Sugarcane distillery waste water (SDW) or vinasse is the residual liquid waste generated during sugarcane molasses fermentation and alcohol distillation. Worldwide, this effluent is responsible for serious environmental issues. In Reunion Island, between 100 and 200 thousand tons of SDW are produced each year by the three local distilleries.

The hydrophobic fractionation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extracted from anaerobic granular sludge was performed on the DAX-8 resin (two elution pH conditions, i.e., pH 2 and pH 5 were tested).

This paper reviews the formation, structure, and stability of bioaggregates with an emphasis on the composition and distribution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and their role in bioaggregation. Bioaggregation is ubiquitous in natural environment and is of great importance in biological wastewater treatment processes. It greatly influences the flocculability, settleability, and dewaterability for flocs and sludge retention and shear resistance for biofilms.

The protein fraction of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) from two anaerobic granular sludge samples was characterized with sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and a far western blotting method. SDS-PAGE was used with various staining applications to obtain a protein (silver), glycoprotein [periodic acid-Shiff's (PAS)] or proteoglycan-like (Alcian blue at pH 2.5 (carboxylic group) or 1 (sulphated group)) fingerprint.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are, along with microbial cells, the main components of the biological sludges used in wastewater treatment and natural biofilms. EPS play a major role in removing pollutants from water by means of sorption. The ability of soluble EPS (S-EPS) and bound EPS (B-EPS) derived from various bacterial aggregates (flocs, granules, biofilms) to bind at pH 7.

Fingerprints of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from activated and anaerobic granular sludges were obtained by size exclusion chromatography coupled to UV (210 and 280 nm) and fluorescence (221/350 nm (protein-like molecules) and 345/443 nm (humic-like substances)) detection. The total area below the peaks obtained with fluorescence detection is linked to the protein or humic-like substances EPS content. The EPS protein fingerprints, usually recorded with UV-280 nm, change dramatically, mainly in the relative size of peaks when they were measured by a florescence detection method.

Exopolymeric substances (EPS) were extracted by EDTA from activated and anaerobic granular sludge. Due to the presence of EDTA in EPS extract, interferences were pointed out for the characterization of EPS by means of the colorimetric methods and fluorescence spectroscopy. Other methods have been investigated to characterize the EPS protein fraction.

This work characterises the mineral fraction of EPS extracts obtained using eight different methods from two activated sludges by total mineral content determination, Fourier Transformed Infrared spectrometry and with scanning electron microscopy coupled with an EDX probe. Despite EPS dialysis, the EPS extracts displayed a mineral fraction between 2% and 40% of the EPS dry weight depending on the extraction method used. The main mineral elements found in the EPS extract were Ca, Mg, Na, K, Al, Fe, Mn, P, Si and S, but their contents were strongly affected by the extraction method used.
