Article Synopsis
  • Advances in surgical planning and 3D printing are improving craniomaxillofacial surgery by allowing better visualization of patient anatomy, but lengthy print times hinder acute trauma care.
  • Researchers optimized 3D printing variables, such as resolution and model orientation, to enhance efficiency while maintaining quality, testing this on mandibular and midface fracture models.
  • The optimized printing process reduced print times from over 7 hours to under 1 hour, demonstrating that adjustments in size, resolution, and position can enable quicker and effective surgical planning without compromising model accuracy.

Article Synopsis
  • Late secondary reconstruction may be necessary for patients who had poor initial repairs of panfacial fractures, making it tough to see the original facial structure due to healing issues.
  • Surgeons can use virtual reality (VR) combined with original CT scans to recreate an ideal facial structure and plan surgery accordingly.
  • Two patients underwent successful surgeries using this method, with custom guides and implants to correct their facial deformities and achieve desired aesthetic results.

This study assesses ChatGPT's (GPT-3.5) performance on the 2021 ASPS Plastic Surgery In-Service Examination using prompt modifications and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). ChatGPT was instructed to act as a "resident," "attending," or "medical student," and RAG utilized a curated vector database for context.

Mortality following a severe burn is influenced by both patient- and injury-factors, and a number of predictive models have been developed or applied. As there is no consensus on the optimal formula to use, we aimed to investigate the predictive value of the revised Baux score in comparison to other models when determining mortality risk in patients with burn injuries. A systematic review was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have evolved since their introduction to medicine in the 1990s. More powerful software, the miniaturization of hardware, and greater accessibility and affordability enabled novel applications of such virtual tools in surgical practice. This scoping review aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the literature by including all articles between 2018 and 2021 pertaining to VR and AR and their use by plastic and craniofacial surgeons in a clinician-as-user, patient-specific manner.

Introduction: Several strategies have been shown to have some efficacy in the chronically infected total knee arthroplasty (TKA): chronic antibiotic suppression, a second two-stage revision, arthrodesis, and above-the-knee amputation (AKA). We conducted a systematic review to determine the efficacy of these treatments in patients who had previously received a two-stage revision.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed which investigated PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science Databases.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of mask wearing on facial attractiveness and projected first impressions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A total of eight models were evaluated by 200 live raters and 750 online raters both with and without masks while smiling maximally. Both live and online raters looked at the models for 15 s, then completed a first impressions questionnaire.
