Observational as well as experimental studies support that prenatal challenges seemed to be associated with an increased risk for allergic airway diseases in the offspring. However, insights into biomarkers involved in mediating this risk are largely elusive. We here aimed to test the association between endogenous and exogenous factors documented in pregnant women, including psychosocial, endocrine, and life style parameters, and the risk for allergic airway diseases in the children later in life.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between maternal progesterone levels in early pregnancy and fetal birthweight, finding that low progesterone is significantly linked to lower birthweights in girls but not boys.
  • Conducted as a prospective cohort study with 906 selected participants, the research excluded women with certain health conditions and focused on collecting various maternal data alongside measuring hormone levels.
  • Results show that an increase of 1 ng/ml in maternal progesterone during the first trimester correlates with an increase in girls' birthweight by over 10 grams, providing insights into the potential role of hormonal levels in fetal development.
