Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of prehabilitation in elderly patients (80+) undergoing colorectal cancer surgery at a tertiary hospital from 2018 to 2022.
  • Out of 184 patients, 126 underwent surgery, revealing high frailty rates in octogenarians (50%) and nonagenarians (86%) and recorded a low rate of post-surgical complications and mortality.
  • Prehabilitation included physical exercise, nutritional support, and other treatments, showing that prehabilitation for very old patients can yield positive results in surgical settings.

We present a first in human clinical trial of a new rectoscope that shows, by means of transillumination, the optimal point of transection of the rectum in oncologic surgery. The device was developed together with a team of engineers and was manufactured by 3D printing. Eighteen patients with a mean age of 71 years and a mean distance from the tumor to the anal margin measured by colonoscopy of 10.

Purpose: The surgical management of deep infiltrative endometriosis (DE) involving the rectum remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to assess the outcomes from a single tertiary center over a decade with an emphasis on the role of a protective loop ileostomy (PI).

Methods: A retrospective review of outcomes for 168 patients managed between 2008 and 2018 is presented including 57 rectal shaves, 23 discoid excisions, and 88 segmental rectal resections.

Background: Oncological outcomes of self-expanding metallic stent used as a bridge to surgery in potential curative patients with left-sided colonic cancer obstruction remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate perioperative and mid-term oncological outcomes of 2 of the currently most commonly performed treatments in left-sided colonic cancer obstruction.

Methods: This is a retrospective multicenter study including patients with left-sided colonic cancer obstruction treated with curative intent between 2013 and 2017.

Background: Digestive tract resections are usually followed by an anastomosis. Anastomotic leakage, normally due to failed healing, is the most feared complication in digestive surgery because it is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite technical and technological advances and focused research, its rates have remained almost unchanged the last decades.

Purpose Of The Study: The definitive treatment for liver failure is, currently, liver transplantation. Research into other possible treatments, focused on achieving regeneration of the liver parenchyma, have led to the development of methods to generate hepatocytes from stem cells. In our study, we transplant allogenic adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs), not previously differentiated to hepatocytes, to treat acute liver failure induced by intraperitoneal administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in a Sprague-Dawley rat model.
