The high transmission rate and incurability of recurrent Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection require an accurate and fast detection approach for its efficient prevention. In an attempt to find a novel sensitive and simple optical diagnostic technique which enables on-spot testing, here we developed label-free biosensors based on E7 nematic liquid crystals (LCs) for specific detection of HSV DNA. For this purpose, homeotropically oriented LCs as smart materials are spread on the textile grid to make their both upper and lower surfaces be in contact with ambient air.

Tunable liquid crystal (LC) lenses have gained significant attention in recent decades due to their lightweight, low cost, and versatility in applications such as augmented reality, ophthalmic devices, and astronomy. Although various structures have been proposed to improve the performance of LC lenses, the thickness of the LC cell is a critical design parameter that is often reported without sufficient justification. While increasing the cell thickness can lead to a shorter focal length, it also results in higher material response times and light scattering.

With the advent of new complex but precise radiotherapy techniques, the demands for an accurate, feasible three-dimensional (3D) dosimetry system have been increased. A 3D dosimeter system generally should not only have accurate and precise results but should also feasible, inexpensive, and time consuming. Recently, one of the new candidates for 3D dosimetry is optical computed tomography (CT) with a radiochromic dosimeter such as PRESAGE®.
