[Antiphospolipid syndrome related chorea gravidarum case with psychotic symptoms misdiagnosed as conversion disorder: case report].

Chorea gravidarum (CG) is a rare movement disorder characterized by rapid, irregular randomly distributed involuntary movements during pregnancy. Similar to Sydenham chorea, psychiatric symptoms may be observed in cases of CG. CG may be idiopathic or secondary to an underlying cause.

Anesthesia mumps resulting in temporary facial nerve paralysis after the auditory brainstem implantation in a 3-year-old child.

An acute transient sialadenitis of the major salivary glands in the early postoperative period is called 'anesthesia mumps'. It has been reported in different surgical procedures especially in neurosurgical procedures. Anesthesia mumps develops very fast after the extubation period but it usually regresses with no sequelae within a few hours.

Cholinium-Based Poly(ionic liquid)s: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application as Biocompatible Ion Gels and Cellulose Coatings.

Cholinium-based ionic liquid methacrylic monomers having halide, lactate and acetate counter-anions were synthesized and polymerized by using conventional free radical polymerization. The polymer properties were characterized by NMR, SEC/GPC, TGA, and DSC and compared among eight different cationic polymethacrylic analogs. Polycations with different methacrylic alkylammonium backbones having lactate anion displayed comparatively better thermal stability than those having the acetate counter-anions and they also exhibited lower glass transition temperatures than their counterparts having acetate and halide counteranions.

Effect of port-care frequency on venous port catheter-related complications in cancer patients.

Purpose: Subcutaneous central venous port catheters (SCVPC) are of great importance in the treatment of patients with malignancies since they provide secure vascular access. Our aim was to assess the impact of long-term catheter care frequency on the frequency of port-related complications.

Patients And Methods: Two hundred and seven patients who had not been on active chemotherapy through their SCVPC for at least 3 months were enrolled into the study.

Isolated sacral dislocation in a 4-year-old child.

Sacral dislocation is an uncommon form of injury in childhood. A 4-year-old girl who was injured in a motor vehicle accident was seen in the emergency room. On physical examination, ecchymosis and tenderness in the abdomen and sacral region was identified.

Traumatic shoulder fracture-dislocation in a 7-year-old child: a case report.

Introduction: In contrast to adults, traumatic glenohumeral dislocation is a rarely observed condition among children. In some cases, success in durable reduction with conservative methods, and achieving lasting treatment, may not be possible.

Prevalence of Blood Brotherhood among High School Students in Erzurum and the Effect of Peer-led Education on this Practice.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of blood brotherhood (BB) in Erzurum, Turkey and to observe the effect of education interventions on this risky cultural behavior.

Materials And Methods: This study was designed as a cross-sectional intervention, based on minor interventions through a peer-led awareness campaign regarding the transfer of blood-borne diseases through BB rites. This study was conducted from February through May 2007 at 29 high schools in Erzurum.

The insertion/deletion polymorphism in the ACE gene and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

An insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism was identified in intron 16 of the gene encoding the human angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE), a candidate gene for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We investigated the relationship between this polymorphism in the ACE gene and the risk of developing COPD. Sixty-six COPD in-patients and 40 non-smoking control individuals were recruited for this study.

Cu-catalyzed selective mono-N-pyridylation: direct access to 2-aminoDMAP/sulfonamides as bifunctional organocatalysts.

Direct and selective mono-N-pyridylation of trans-(R,R)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine is described here. Facile preparation of a novel chiral 2-aminoDMAP core catalaphore via Cu catalysis has led to the development of various sulfonamide/2-aminoDMAPs as bifunctional acid/base organocatalysts (most in two steps overall), which have been shown to very effectively promote asymmetric conjugate addition of acetylacetone to trans-β-nitroolefins with good to excellent yields (87-93%) and enantioselectivites (up to 99%).

Chromogenic and fluorogenic sensing of biological thiols in aqueous solutions using BODIPY-based reagents.

Judicious design of BODIPY dyes carrying nitroethenyl substituents in conjugation with the BODIPY core yields dyes that respond to biological thiols by both absorbance and emission changes. Incorporation of solubilizing ethyleneglycol units ensures water solubility. The result is bright signaling of biologically relevant thiols in the longer wavelength region of the visible spectrum and in aqueous solutions.

Review of Van earthquakes form an orthopaedic perspective: a multicentre retrospective study.

Purpose: This is a descriptive analysis, of victims of Turkey's October 23, 2011 and November 21, 2011 Van earthquakes. The goal of this study is investigated the injury profile of the both earthquakes in relation to musculoskeletal trauma.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 3,965 patients admitted to in seven hospitals.

Intramedullary nailing and angulation prevention in distal metaphyseal tibial fractures.

Intramedullary nailing, which is preferred in tibial diaphyseal fractures, is also frequently used in distal third tibial fractures. Various angular deformities, including varus/valgus deformity, may be observed during postintramedullary nailing. Orthopedic surgeons use several methods to prevent this problem.

Triple DMARD combination for rheumatoid arthritis resistant to methotrexate and steroid combination: a single-center experience.

The mainstay of RA treatment is the disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, and triple DMARD combination is now known to be better than monotherapies. Our aim in this trial was to report our clinical experience with triple DMARD therapy for resistant rheumatoid arthritis. Data of 140 patients with RA resistant to methotrexate and steroid combination were evaluated retrospectively.

Jaffe-Campanacci's syndrome is a very rare condition and was first described by Jaffe in 1958. It is presented by non-ossifying fibromas, café-au-lait spots and axillar freckling. Non-ossifying fibromas are usually found after minor traumas or stress fractures.

Extra-articular Tenosynovial Chondromatosis Mimicking a Neoplastic Disease in the First Web Space of the Hand.

Tenosynovial chondromatosis is a very rare disease. The most common symptom is a slowly enlarging soft tissue mass, which may be painful or cause limitation of joint motion. Plain radiograph may appear normal during early phases of the disease, but subsequent imaging may be necessary to exclude other pathologies.

Expression pattern analysis of microRNAs in Caenorhabditis elegans.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are ∼22 nucleotide single-stranded RNA molecules that originate from hairpin precursors and regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level by basepairing with target messenger RNA and blocking its translation or inducing its degradation. miRNAs play important roles in a variety of biological processes, including development, proliferation, differentiation, cell fate determination, apoptosis, signal transduction, host-viral interactions, and tumorigenesis. Methodological advances in miRNA studies allowed identification of biological roles for many miRNAs, and establishing the spatiotemporal expression patterns of miRNAs is one of the approaches to elucidate their biological functions.

Life-threatening agranulocytosis, anemia, and plasmacytosis after dipyrone use for fever in a child.

Dipyrone or metamizole Na (Novalgin) is commonly used as an antipyretic, analgesic, and spasmolytic agent in some parts of the world; however, it is banned in developed countries because of severe side effects. Here we present a case of a 4-year-old boy who developed life-threatening agranulocytosis, anemia, and marked plasmacytosis in his bone marrow after dipyrone use for fever, which resolved with steroid therapy.

Tunable wetting of polymer surfaces.

A simple method was developed for the preparation of polymeric materials with controlled surface wettability or tunable surface wetting. The method is applicable to a large number of polymers, thermoplastic or thermoset. With this method, it is possible to prepare polymer surfaces with static water contact angles ranging from 0° (superhydrophilic) to greater than 170° (superhydrophobic).

Tocilizumab for giant cell arteritis: an amazing result.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), previously Horton's disease, is a systemic vasculitis affecting the middle-sized or large arteries in patients older than 50 years of age. The mainstay of the treatment of GCA is glucocorticoid therapy. Herein, we present a case with giant cell arteritis resistant to oral and intravenous steroid, intravenous cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate mofetil, but successfully treated with tocilizumab.

Does androgen receptor have a prognostic role in patients with estrogen/progesterone-negative and c-erbB-2-positive breast cancer?

Recently, it has been shown that androgen and androgen receptor (AR) also have an important role in the pathogenesis and outcome of breast cancer. However, their significance in different subtypes of breast cancer is still under investigation. The aim of this study was to study the effects of AR on clinicopathological features and prognosis in patients with estrogen and progesterone receptor (ER/PR)-negative, HER2-positive breast cancer.

Aim: To find out the predictors of scapula fractures in high-impact blunt trauma patients and the predictors of missing them in the emergency department (ED).

Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive review of patients treated at a single hospital over a 3.5-year period.

A confusing case: pulmonary lesions including cavities, isolated left heart endocarditis and inferior vena cava thrombosis in a patient with perforated diverticulitis.

There are numerous causes of pulmonary cavitary lesions as infection (bacterial, parasitic and invasive fungal), Wegener granulomatosis (WG) and other vasculitis, sarcoidosis, malignancy, septic thromboembolism, airways disease (cystic bronchiectasis and bullae), pneumatoceles and traumatic parenchymal laceration. Herein, we present a case with perforated diverticulitis causing pulmonary cavitary lesions and a septic thrombus in the neighboring inferior vena cava.

ALL-BFM 95 treatment in Turkish children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia--experience of a single center.

Little is known about the likelihood of curing children with high-dose chemotherapy regimens for treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in Turkey.
