Unintended Consequences of Data Sharing Under the Meaningful Use Program.

Interoperability has been designed to improve the quality and efficiency of health care. It allows the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to collect data on quality measures as a part of the Meaningful Use program. Covered providers who fail to provide data have lower rates of reimbursement.

A randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of social networking on chronic disease management in rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: Social networking has been shown to improve health outcomes in certain patient populations. While patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) increasingly use social networking to communicate with peers, the effects of these interactions are largely unknown.

Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, we compared RA patients who participated in a social networking group moderated by peer leaders and who had access to a static website offering RA materials with a control group, who only had access to the website.

Interactions and perceptions of patients with rheumatoid arthritis participating in an online support group.

Objective: Peer support is important for psychosocial well-being in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our objective was to assess the interactions, engagement, and perceptions of participants in an online support group for patients with RA.

Methods: Participants were 18 years or older, diagnosed with RA within 10 years, and residing in the USA or Canada.

The relationship between self-compassion and the risk for substance use disorder.

Objective: This study explored the relationship between substance use disorder risk and self-compassion and posits a model for how the two are related through the mitigation of suffering.

Method: Study participants were recruited using social media to complete an online survey that included a basic socio-demographic survey and two validated instruments, the Self-Compassion Survey and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), which screens for substance use disorder (SUD) risk. Established cut scores for ASSIST were used to divide participants into low, moderate and high-risk groups.

Quality assessment of websites providing educational content for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: We performed an environmental scan of currently available websites providing educational information about rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and evaluated the quality of these websites.

Methods: We searched three separate search engines, Google, Bing, and Ask.com, on August 27, 2015, using two search terms, "arthritis" and "rheumatoid.

Sequential incoherence in a multi-party synchronous computer mediated communication for an introductory Health Informatics course.

Online courses will play a key role in the high-volume Informatics education required to train the personnel that will be necessary to fulfill the health IT needs of the country. Online courses can cause feelings of isolation in students. A common way to address these feelings is to hold synchronous online "chats" for students.

Keeping learning central: a model for implementing emerging technologies.

FELT PROBLEM: Technology integration continues to be a challenge for health science faculty. While students expect emerging technologies to be used in the classroom, faculty members desire a strategic process to incorporate technology for the students' benefit. OUR SOLUTION: We have developed a model that provides faculty a strategy for integrating emerging technologies into the classroom.

Predictors of student success in graduate biomedical informatics training: introductory course and program success.

Objective: To predict student performance in an introductory graduate-level biomedical informatics course from application data.

Design: A predictive model built through retrospective review of student records using hierarchical binary logistic regression with half of the sample held back for cross-validation. The model was also validated against student data from a similar course at a second institution.

An online, interactive approach to teaching neuroscience to adolescents.

Most of today's students are skilled in instant messaging, Web browsing, online games, and blogs. These have become part of the social landscape and have changed how we learn and where we learn. The question becomes how to harness the attractiveness and ubiquity of electronic venues toward the goal of teaching neuroscience.

Recruiting future neuroscientists: what asking the recruits can teach us.

Many different strategies are used to recruit students into scientific research careers, including neuroscience research. These strategies are rarely based on knowledge about students; instead, activities are selected based on their ease of implementation. The goal of the LEARN Project is to encourage high school students into mental health science research using the theme of learning and memory.

Orientation of d-tubocurarine in the muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-binding site.

Ligand modification and receptor site-directed mutagenesis were used to examine binding of the competitive antagonist, d-tubocurarine (dTC), to the muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR). By using various dTC analogs, we measured the interactions of specific dTC functional groups with amino acid positions in the AChR gamma-subunit. Because data for mutations at residue gammaTyr(117) were the most consistent with direct interaction with dTC, we focused on that residue.
