Background: Primary cutaneous umbilical melanoma is rare. Thorough information regarding its characteristics and treatment, including use of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) staging, is difficult to obtain. Atypical Spitz tumor (AST) is a melanocytic proliferation that shares histopathologic features of Spitz nevus and spitzoid melanoma. Distinction of AST from spitzoid melanoma is critical because the majority of ASTs will follow an indolent course. Array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) has been suggested as a potential tool for evaluating malignant potential in spitzoid tumors.
