Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a side effect of conventional antipsychotic medications, possibly linked to a lack of cholinergic activity, and cholinergic drugs have been explored as a treatment option for it.
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of various cholinergic drugs in treating antipsychotic-induced TD in individuals with schizophrenia or other chronic mental health issues.
A systematic search identified 14 controlled trials conducted from 1976 to 2014, comparing the effects of cholinergic medications to placebo among patients with TD.
