The textile industry generates significant amounts of wastewater containing high concentrations of azo dyes. An important point in the process of purification of azo dyes is their influence on the activated sludge (AS) in wastewater treatment plants. Azo dyes, such as amaranth, play the role of xenobiotics.

On 5 November 2014, 30 tons of mazut were emitted in Sofia's WWTP 'Kubratovo', passing through equipment and damaging the functioning of the technological modules. The rehabilitation of activated sludge (AS) after shock loading as well as the development of detoxification activity were investigated.

At the final step of the biodegradation of the organics the most sensitive to the ambient factors group of microorganisms - the methanogens, produces biogas with main component methane. Common problems of these technologies are low biogas yield, production of biogas with low quality or situations in which the plant gets out of exploitation.

The biodetoxification and mechanisms of degradation of many xenobiotics have been studied and are well documented. There remains the important issue of the impact of nanomodulators on biodetoxification processes and their potential to optimize and regulate biodegradation of recalcitrant xenobiotics.

The examined parameters of the process were as follows: technological parameters; key enzyme activities (azoreductase, succinate dehydrogenase, catechol-1,2-dioxygenase, catechol-2,3-dioxygenase); the number of azo-degrading bacteria and the bacteria from genus (plate count technique); the amount and the location of sp. using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH).

The influence of mercury on the transformation processes in the waters and the sediments in the reservoir of a small hydroelectric power plant (SHPP) Lakatnik was simulated in laboratory conditions. SHPP Lakatnik is the first (of nine similar) SHPPs put into exploitation in the middle part of the Iskar River (Bulgaria). In previous studies of the sediments in the reservoir of SHPP Lakatnik, our team found high concentrations of mercury, sometimes exceeding maximum concentration limit (MCL).
