The study investigated the distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) like Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, and others in soils near the Sarala gold-ore group in Khakassia, Russia, focusing on their health risks due to past mining activities.
High concentrations of PTEs were detected, particularly mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As), posing moderate to significant ecological risks, with arsenic identified as a carcinogen for both adults and children.
The research highlights the sources of soil pollution, indicating that waste tailings are the most significant contributors, and provides critical data to inform state-level decisions on managing contaminated land.
