Background: In the absence of evidence from randomised controlled trials, observational data can be used to emulate clinical trials and guide clinical decisions. Observational studies are, however, susceptible to confounding and bias. Among the used techniques to reduce indication bias are propensity score matching and marginal structural models.

Variability of the response to immunotherapy among subgroups of patients with multiple sclerosis.

Background And Purpose: This study assessed the effect of patient characteristics on the response to disease-modifying therapy (DMT) in multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods: We extracted data from 61,810 patients from 135 centers across 35 countries from the MSBase registry. The selection criteria were: clinically isolated syndrome or definite MS, follow-up ≥ 1 year, and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score ≥ 3, with ≥1 score recorded per year.

Coronavirus disease 2019 in Latin American patients with multiple sclerosis.

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who present coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are of particular interest to neurologists. These patients have a neuroimmune disease and receive immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive therapies in the long-term. We present here data from 73 patients with MS and a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 from five Latin American countries.

Status of the neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in Latin America.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) is an increasing diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in Latin America (LATAM). Despite the heterogeneity of this population, ethnic and socioeconomic commonalities exist, and epidemiologic studies from the region have had a limited geographic and population outreach. Identification of some aspects from the entire region are lacking.

Clinical practice patterns in multiple sclerosis management: Mexican consensus recommendations.

Background: Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2 million people. Clinical decisions are performed under evidence-based medicine. The appearance of new disease-modifying therapies and changes in diagnostic criteria complicates the decision-making process in clinical practice.

Cyclophosphamide treatment in active multiple sclerosis.

Objective: Cyclophosphamide (CYC) is an alkylating agent with immunosuppressive effect by inhibiting DNA synthesis and producing apoptosis used in many autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Here, we analyze the efficacy of CYC treatment in relapsing-remitting (RRMS) and active secondary progressive MS (SPMS) in our center with a monthly scheme.

Methods: Patients with MS treated with CYC and a follow up of at least 36 months were eligible for inclusion.

Background: The complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the clinical entity caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), are not limited to the respiratory system. Leukoencephalopathy with microbleeds is increasingly seen in patients with COVID-19. New information is needed to delineate better the clinical implications of this infectious disease.

Native American ancestry significantly contributes to neuromyelitis optica susceptibility in the admixed Mexican population.

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is an autoimmune disease with a higher prevalence in non-European populations. Because the Mexican population resulted from the admixture between mainly Native American and European populations, we used genome-wide microarray, HLA high-resolution typing and AQP4 gene sequencing data to analyze genetic ancestry and to seek genetic variants conferring NMO susceptibility in admixed Mexican patients. A total of 164 Mexican NMO patients and 1,208 controls were included.

Disease-modifying therapies in multiple sclerosis in Latin America.

The treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) has become increasingly complex during the last 10 years, mainly because of the advent of new and more potent disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). In Latin America, the therapeutic repertoire available for MS treatment is similar to the one in the rest of the world, but the high costs of these drugs, in conjunction with the limited resources of the social security health systems, makes the treatment of MS more difficult. For neurologists in Latin America, providing personalized MS treatment has become a challenge.
