This study examines the swelling kinetics of polyacrylamide hydrogel beads in aqueous glycerin solutions of different concentrations. The total absorbed mass of the hydrogel beads remains nearly constant, independent of glycerin concentration, but the swelling process is markedly slower with increasing glycerin concentration in the aqueous solutions. Absorption capacity curves exhibit universal kinetics when time is rescaled using a characteristic time proportional to the viscosity of the solutions.

Laboratory study of slope stability of granular media remains a challenge for modeling, understanding, and predicting natural hazards, such as avalanches and landslides, precursory signs of which are controlled by numerous physical parameters. The present work focuses on the impact of the humidity, in the range of 40-90%, on the stability of monodisperse dense packings of spherical beads. The beads are in a transparent box that is slowly and continuously tilted and allows simultaneous top and lateral optical measurements of global displacements of grains at the surface, defined as precursors.

We present results from simulations of regular pentagons arranged in a rectangular box. The particles are subjected to vertical tapping. We study the packing fraction, number of contacts, and arch size distribution as a function of the tapping amplitude.
