In this clinical review we highlight aspects of the diagnosis and management of pulmonary embolism (PE) in pregnancy and post-partum and how this may impact on antenatal and postnatal management. In recent decades, women with significant medical conditions have increasingly chosen to become pregnant. This has broadened and intensified the interface between obstetrics and internal medicine, a collaboration which has always needed cooperation but which increasingly demands open discussion and planning to ensure optimal outcomes for mother and fetus. The aims of this article are to describe the state of obstetric medicine practice in Australia and New Zealand, including its history and development, the training and education curriculum, organisation of its service delivery, and potential opportunities for research and collaboration.

SOMANZ (Society of Obstetric Medicine Australia and New Zealand) has written a guideline to provide evidence-based guidance for the investigation and care of women with sepsis in pregnancy or the postpartum period. The guideline is evidence-based and incorporates recent changes in the definition of sepsis. The etiology, investigation and treatment of bacterial, viral and non-infective causes of sepsis are discussed.
