Huge Varicose Inferior Mesenteric Vein: an Unanticipated (99m) Tc-labeled Red Blood Cell Scintigraphy Finding.

Ectopic varices (EcV) are enlarged portosystemic venous collaterals, which usually develop secondary to portal hypertension (PHT). Mesocaval collateral vessels are unusual pathways to decompress the portal system. Here we report the case of a huge varicose inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) that drained into perirectal collateral veins, demonstrated by (99m)Tc-labeled red blood cell (RBC) scintigraphy performed for lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in a 14-year-old girl.

Treatment of arteriovenous malformations: assessment of 2 techniques--transmandibular curettage versus resection and immediate replantation.

Purpose: This study evaluates 2 surgical methods used at our center for the treatment of mandibular arteriovenous malformations (AVMs): resection with immediate replantation and curettage via proximal transmandibular osteotomy.

Patients And Methods: Patients with AVMs of the mandible who were treated during a 17-year period between 1992 and 2008 at our department were assessed. Two surgical techniques were used for treatment: 1) resection of the segment, curettage of the intrabony lesion, extraction of involved teeth, and immediate replantation and 2) proximal osteotomy curettage of the lesion within the bone and extraction of involved teeth.

Treatment of infected pseudoaneurysm in drug abusers: ligation or reconstruction?

Background: Recently, there has been an increase in the incidence of major vascular complications such as infected pseudoaneurysm due to intravenous drug use.

Objective: For better understanding of the existing controversies regarding the optimal surgical management of infected pseudoaneurysm, the present study was conducted.

Methods: Medical charts of 36 consecutive patients who underwent surgery in Taleghani Hospital, Tehran, Iran from 1996 through 2003, were retrospectively analyzed.
