Optimizing risk factors influence Intensive Care stay after Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy? An observational cohort study.

Background: It may be necessary to admit patients receiving Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) to the intensive care unit (ICU). They were required to evaluate the length of ICU stay (LOS) following HIPEC, as well as their survival rates and risk factors that influence LOS.

Methods: 74 HIPEC patients were observed after being admitted to the ICU.

Life-Threatening Intraparenchymal Hemorrhage of Steroid-Induced Hepatic Adenomas in a Healthy Man.

Hepatocellular adenomas are uncommon benign epithelial tumors of the liver that are associated with several risk factors such as anabolic androgens and oral contraceptive pills. They may present as incidental findings, with abdominal pain or hemorrhage. This case report details the presentation and management of a life-threatening hepatocellular adenomas hemorrhage in a seemingly healthy 28-year-old man.

Spontaneous Hepatitis B Seroclearance upon Development of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

The spontaneous seroclearance of hepatitis B upon development of a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is extremely rare. To date, there has been one published case series reporting hepatitis B seroconversion following HCC resection. We describe two novel cases of spontaneous hepatitis B seroclearance following the development of HCC, prior to resection.

Prolonged Unexplained Hypoxemia as Initial Presentation of Cirrhosis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a pulmonary complication of advanced liver disease with dyspnea as the predominant presenting symptom. The diagnosis of HPS can often be missed due to its nonspecific presentation and the presence of other comorbidities. CASE REPORT We present an interesting case of an obese 43-year-old man who presented with progressive, unexplained hypoxemia and shortness of breath in the absence of any symptoms or signs of chronic liver disease.

Improving prognosis for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in Ireland 1994-2008.

Objectives: The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing in low-prevalence countries such as the USA, UK and Ireland. Over the past two decades, diagnostic techniques have improved and new treatments have been introduced. The aim of this study was to determine whether there has been an impact on hepatoma mortality in Ireland.

Liver transplantation in Ireland.

The Irish National Liver Transplant program commenced in 1993 in St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin. It is an adult-only program and is the only liver transplant program in Ireland.

Short- and long-term mortality associated with new-onset atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objectives: Our objectives were to evaluate short- and long-term mortality associated with new-onset atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting and to identify preoperative and intraoperative patient characteristics associated with new-onset atrial fibrillation.

Methods: Three independent investigators comprehensively reviewed the literature using Medline from 1960, Web of Science from 1980, and Scopus from 1960. All searches were done through December 2009.

Lack of clinical long-term benefit with the use of a drug eluting stent compared to use of a bare metal stent in saphenous vein grafts.

Background: Small randomized trials have shown short-term improved outcome with drug-eluting stents (DES) over bare metal stent (BMS) in saphenous vein graft (SVG) interventions by reducing in-stent restenosis and target vessel revascularization (TVR). It is not clear, however, if these benefits are maintained long term. The aim of this study is to compare the outcome in a larger cohort of patients undergoing SVG stent implantation with DES or BMS, at 2 years.
