Life cycle assessment is increasingly used in the healthcare sector to facilitate more environmentally informed supply and medication use. A thorough life cycle assessment comparing the carbon impacts of 10 different single-use anaesthetic drug trays yielded surprising findings. Although life cycle assessment can guide decision-making, results must be interpreted clinically and in light of all available options, including eliminating unnecessary consumption altogether.

Pain management in pregnant and postpartum people with an opioid-use disorder (OUD) requires a balance between risks associated with opioid tolerance, including withdrawal or return to opioid use, considerations around social needs of the maternal-infant dyad, and the provision of adequate pain relief for the birth episode that is often characterized as the worst pain a person will experience in their lifetime. This multidisciplinary consensus statement between the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP), Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), and American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) provides a framework for pain management in obstetric patients with OUD. The purpose of this consensus statement is to provide practical and evidence-based recommendations and is targeted to health care providers in obstetrics and anesthesiology.

Introduction: Prolonged times to tracheal extubation are intervals from the end of surgery to extubation ≥15 minutes. We examined why there are associations with the end-tidal inhalational agent concentration as a proportion of the age‑adjusted minimum alveolar concentration (MAC fraction) at the end of surgery.

Methods: The retrospective cohort study used 11.

Upper extremity injuries are frequent in athletes which may require surgeries. Regional anesthesia for postoperative analgesia is important to aid recovery, and peripheral nerve blocks for surgical anesthesia enable surgeries to be performed without general anesthetics and their associated adverse effects. The relevant nerve block approaches to anesthetize the brachial plexus for elbow, wrist and hand surgeries are discussed in this article.

Purpose: Total joint arthroplasty (TJA), particularly for the hip and knee, is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. The advancement/evolution of surgical and anesthesia techniques have allowed TJA to be performed on an ambulatory/same-day discharge basis. In this Continuing Professional Development module, we synthesize the perioperative evidence that may aid the development of successful ambulatory TJA pathways.

Background: Regional anaesthesia use is growing worldwide, and there is an increasing emphasis on research in regional anaesthesia to improve patient outcomes. However, priorities for future study remain unclear. We therefore conducted an international research prioritisation exercise, setting the agenda for future investigators and funding bodies.

Background: Inconsistent nomenclature and anatomical descriptions of regional anesthetic techniques hinder scientific communication and engender confusion; this in turn has implications for research, education and clinical implementation of regional anesthesia. Having produced standardized nomenclature for abdominal wall, paraspinal and chest wall regional anesthetic techniques, we aimed to similarly do so for upper and lower limb peripheral nerve blocks.

Methods: We performed a three-round Delphi international consensus study to generate standardized names and anatomical descriptions of upper and lower limb regional anesthetic techniques.

The opioid crisis is a public health concern in Canada with a continued rise in deaths and presents a significant economic impact on the healthcare system. There is a need to develop and implement strategies for decreasing the risk of opioid overdoses and other opioid-related harms resulting from the use of prescription opioids. Pharmacists, as medication experts and educators, and as one of the most accessible frontline healthcare providers, are well positioned to provide effective opioid stewardship through a pain management program focused on improving pain management for patients, supporting appropriate prescribing and dispensing of opioids, and supporting safe and appropriate use of opioids to minimize potential opioid misuse, abuse, and harm.

Artery-to-artery embolism (AAE) is a common stroke mechanism in intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD), associated with a considerable risk of recurrent stroke. We aimed to investigate cerebral hemodynamic features associated with AAE in symptomatic ICAD. Patients with anterior-circulation, symptomatic ICAD confirmed in CT angiography (CTA) were recruited.

Purpose: Postamputation pain is challenging because of complex mechanisms involving a multitude of pain pathways and psychological factors. This patient population also tends to have extensive comorbidities with or without a background of chronic pain. Electrical neuromodulation such as peripheral nerve stimulation has gained traction in the realm of chronic pain.

Introduction: Common anesthesia practice for hand surgery combines a preoperative regional anesthetic and intraoperative monitored anesthesia care (MAC). Despite adequate regional anesthesia, patients may receive doses of intraoperative sedatives which can result in oversedation and potentially avoidable complications. VR could prove to be a valuable tool for patients and providers by distracting the mind from processing noxious stimuli resulting in minimized sedative use and reduced risk of oversedation without negatively impacting patient satisfaction.

Revision shoulder surgery can pose significant analgesic challenges as locoregional blocks are often avoided to enable early recognition of iatrogenic nerve injuries. Our case describes the utilisation of pre-operative and intra-operative low-frequency percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation via a 'dry' interscalene catheter, inserted pre-operatively for a patient presenting for revision total shoulder arthroplasty who was experiencing significant shoulder joint pain despite a prior total shoulder arthroplasty. The clinical considerations and safety aspects are discussed further.

Objective: As Hong Kong faced the 5th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the facilitators and hurdles toward effective vaccination is important for healthcare professionals to understand the vaccination gap among patients with epilepsy.

Methods: A cross-sectional, pragmatic study of COVID-19 vaccination was performed at a tertiary epilepsy center with regards to patterns of vaccination and any unusually high rate of adverse events. Patients having recent visits at the epilepsy center (4 months) had their anonymized electronic linkage records examined 12 months after the inception of vaccination program for types of vaccines, seizure demographics, and adverse events following immunization (AEFI).

Background And Objectives: Documentation is important for quality improvement, education, and research. There is currently a lack of recommendations regarding key aspects of documentation in regional anesthesia. The aim of this study was to establish recommendations for documentation in regional anesthesia.
