Although peripheral nerve stimulation using intraneural electrodes has been shown to be an effective and reliable solution to restore sensory feedback after hand loss, there have been no reports on the characterization of multi-channel stimulation. A deeper understanding of how the simultaneous stimulation of multiple electrode channels affects the evoked sensations should help in improving the definition of encoding strategies for bidirectional prostheses. We characterized the sensations evoked by simultaneous stimulation of median and ulnar nerves (multi-channel configuration) in four transradial amputees who had been implanted with four TIMEs (Transverse Intrafascicular Multichannel Electrodes).

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of scaphoid non unions surgically treated with bone graft versus medial condyle corticoperiosteal free flaps.

Materials And Methods: 32 patients were divided in 2 groups. Group A (17 patients 12male, 5 females, mean age 35 years old) treated with bone grafts; Group B (15patients 11 male, 4 females, mean age 33 years old) treated with medial condyle cortico periosteal free flap.

Background And Purpose: Autoimmune encephalitides (AE) include a spectrum of neurological disorders whose diagnosis revolves around the detection of neuronal antibodies (Abs). Consensus-based diagnostic criteria (AE-DC) allow clinic-serological subgrouping of AE, with unclear prognostic implications. The impact of AE-DC on patients' management was studied, focusing on the subgroup of Ab-negative-AE.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to describe clinical and radiological long-term results of an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy associated with an outside-in decompressive needling of the cyst for lateral parameniscal cyst.

Methods: Eighteen patients with symptomatic parameniscal cysts treated between April 2002 and September 2009 were retrospectively included in the study. All patients underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (preserving peripheral rim) and needling of the cyst using a 20-gauge needle.

Background And Aim: Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) and Wilson's disease (WD) is considered the prototype of neurodegenerative disorders characterised by the overloading of iron and copper in the central nervous system. Growing evidence has unveiled the involvement of these metals in brain cortical neurotransmission. Aim of this study was to assess cortical excitability profile due to copper and iron overload.

Purpose: As the population ages, it is important to determine whether total knee arthroplasties (TKA)s are safe and beneficial in the octogenarian population. The aims of the present study were: (1) to assess the effect of comorbidities and age on the incidence of postoperative complications following TKA and (2) to evaluate the mid-term outcome of octogenarian patients.

Methods: A retrospective matched-paired analysis by gender, BMI and duration of follow-up was conducted on 206 patients older than 80 years and younger than 75 years between 2009 and 2016, undergoing primary TKA.

Background: Pseudo-ascites is a very rare condition in children and remains a challenging diagnosis. Targeted imaging may be helpful, but a high index of clinical suspicion is often necessary to guide the investigations, as pseudo-ascites may efficiently mimic true ascites. To date, still many cases of pseudo-ascites suffer diagnostic and therapeutic delay, and some are only diagnosed during surgical exploration.

Purpose: Treatment of patients with dementia and hip fracture is challenging. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) with dual mobility cup (DMC) has been designed to reduce the rate of dislocation by increasing the stability of the implant. This study aimed to compare the dislocation rates of DMC THA with hemiarthroplasty (HA) in elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fracture (FNF) and a diagnosis of dementia.

Background: Natural history models for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are derived from adult patient data, but have never been validated in children. It is unclear how accurate such models are for children with PSC.

Methods: We utilized the pediatric PSC consortium database to assess the Revised Mayo Clinic, Amsterdam-Oxford, and Boberg models.

Cerebral post-stroke plasticity has been repeatedly investigated via functional neuroimaging techniques mainly based on blood flow/metabolism. However, little is known on predictive value of topological properties of widely distributed neural networks immediately following stroke on rehabilitation outcome and post-stroke recovery measured by early functional outcome. The utility of EEG network parameters (i.

Background: Hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) is a rare genetic disorder of fructose metabolism due to aldolase B enzyme deficiency. Treatment consists of fructose, sorbitol, and sucrose (FSS)-free diet. We explore possible correlations between daily fructose traces intake and liver injury biomarkers on a long-term period, in a cohort of young patients affected by HFI.

Background: Perioperative pain management for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) improves patient outcomes and facilitates recovery. In this study, we compared the effects of preoperative oral acetaminophen vs intravenous (IV) acetaminophen administered once intraoperatively and once postoperatively.

Methods: Two standardized, multimodal analgesia protocols were compared in patients undergoing primary, unilateral TKA.

Background: Increased femoral tunnel widening and weakness of the hamstring muscles postoperatively have been described as potential adverse events after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) with a hamstring graft. Meniscectomy and cartilage lesions are important factors for the development of degenerative osteoarthritis.

Purpose: To compare 15-year follow-up data with 5-year follow-up data from the same cohort of patients after ACLR with a hamstring autograft using an outside-in technique.

Endometriosis can impair fertility by reducing ovarian reserve and the production of good-quality oocytes. The surgical removal of endometriotic lesions is generally recommended for women who wish to conceive. In this paper we studied whether ovarian cortex adjacent to excised small (diameter ≤ 4 cm) endometriotic cyst (here referred as Cortex Surrounding Endometriotic Cyst, CSEC) showed signs of tissue damages by evaluating the expression of proteins involved in DNA repair and apoptosis.

Rationale: Liver transplanted patients have excellent survival rates, but infectious complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in liver recipients are very challenging. Specific recommendations for anti-TB treatment in liver transplanted patients are lacking.

The goal of this paper is to examine existing methods to study the "Human Brain Connectome" with a specific focus on the neurophysiological ones. In recent years, a new approach has been developed to evaluate the anatomical and functional organization of the human brain: the aim of this promising multimodality effort is to identify and classify neuronal networks with a number of neurobiologically meaningful and easily computable measures to create its connectome. By defining anatomical and functional connections of brain regions on the same map through an integrated approach, comprising both modern neurophysiological and neuroimaging (i.

Background: In total joint arthroplasty, variation in implant use can be driven by vendor relationships, surgeon preference, and technological advancements. Our institution developed a preferred single-vendor program for primary hip and knee arthroplasty. We hypothesized that this initiative would decrease implant costs without compromising performance on quality metrics.

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) constitute a heterogeneous group of cancer-related disorders that can affect any level of the central and peripheral nervous system. There is compelling evidence that PNS are caused by an immune response directed against neural antigens that are abnormally expressed by the tumour. PNS are frequently associated with neural-specific autoantibodies whose characterization has direct implications for diagnostic workup, treatment and outcome.

Introduction: Parinaud syndrome, caused by midbrain infarction, usually manifests as an ocular conjugate upgaze palsy. However, this sign should not point out straightforwardly to Parinaud syndrome, as other lesions in the central nervous system could cause it.

Case Description: The case of a 47-year-old woman showing acute onset of diplopia with bilateral upward gaze palsy is described.
